If indeed Gus Frerotte restructures his deal is that a sign Saban is going to bring in a rookie QB to groom for the future? Maybe I'm reading into this too much, but it would seem to me that if Miami were to get another vet QB, like Chris Simms or Steve McNair they would have no reason to bring Gus back. At least not at the price it will probably cost to do so. Remember he is coming off of one of his best seasons and even though he reportedly is willing to take a pay cut he isn't going to play for free. So does this mean Saban will be dedicated to landing one of the top 3 rookie QBs even if it means trading up and letting them learn under Gus? Just a question to see what people think about this.

I don't think we'll get Simms or McNair. McNair is a mentor and father figure to Vince Young so if Tennessee drafts Vince, McNair will be sure to return. Simms isn't that good anyways and Tampa will want to hold onto him since they've invested so much time. I don't know if Saban's trying to get the middle round QB's because they're going to need lots of time developing and Gus isn't going to last that long. If he gets a top 3 QB (Leinart, Young, Cutler), that would be more sensible since those QB's are more likely to be able to start in under 2 years.

i think we draft a rookie qb anyway. Gus' restructure is simply to save some cash and because in no way is he worth 4.1 million dollars on the cap hit.

You are reading too much into it ... GUS is not worth 4-5 million .. period

We could 'live' with up to 3 ... to keep him around, whether as a starter [most likely] or as a solid backup ...

or maybe it means they ARE going to bring in a QB to compete and likely beat out gus and not draft a rook.

i hope thats what it is because should NOT be starting next year

Agreed. Gus will have to prove that he's better than another veteran. His deal is being restructured so that if he does remain, he can come cheaper. Otherwise, he's probably gone. Look for the Qbs to be a veteran, a rookie, and Cleo Lemon.

It means (combined with Saban's other proclomations about the position)...

1. Gus is going to be the back-up.

2. Saban HOPES Gus will be the back-up, but in any event he's not getting 5 mil.

3. It was nicer than cutting him outright. If he balked he was gone. Period. If he restructures, then he still has a chance, but absolutely not as the guaranteed starter.

Its obvious we aren't bringing him back for 4.5mil, but we could just release him outright. I don't think it was assumed that he was coming back, but by restructuring you would think that would be the case. But like I said, I may just be reading too much into this. I'm just going crazy knowing we are going to have to wait a while before anything happens with this team.

if he restructures then does that mean he can't be released?

Saban has stated on local TV that he wants to bring in a young QB to groom him for the future. Bottom Line: unless a stud veteran QB falls into our laps, expect a young QB to be acquired either via draft or trade with Gus starting in 2006 until the young QB is ready to take over the helms and help us win (and not throw games away like many rookie QBs thrown into the fire to early).

It gives us flexibility and extends Gus' future here. IMO it means that the plan is not to get an older QB and back him up with another old QB. The more likely plan is to get a younger QB. Gus will start until the young guy is ready and them move into the backup role. If it's a draftee, then Gus will start for at least 1 season (unless the draftee is Marinoesque). If it's a guy like Carr then Gus will move to the backup role more quickly, hopefully by the start of the season.

People assume too much. Gus has some value to this team so why would we not want him to restructure. Its obvious we don't want to pay him starting money but what we dont aquire a QB or dont have luck in draft. It would be stupid to just let Gus go when we don't have anyone in place yet. Gus is not good but he has some value as a possible backup or spot starter. Gus knows he is nt worth starter's money.

I think Saban is covering all of his bases.

1. He wants to be in a position to sign a FA QB if one becomes available and the terms of a trade or signing are acceptable.

If its a high profile one he will have the cap money to cover the contract. In this scenario Gus becomes a backup in short order.

If its a low profile QB he would be brought in to compete with Gus and to replace Sage who I am presuming will not be kept.

2. It is very likely that we will draft a QB this year.I doubt we will get one of the top three but if it happens he will be tutored and prepared behind Gus until he would be ready to start.

If we draft one of the second or third tier QBs , IMO its more likely we will pursue a higher profile FA QB to compete with Gus.

Ultimately I believe we will be doing all of the above. We wiill sign a FA QB and draft a QB and let them compete with Gus.

3.If things dont go as planned the team has some valuable cap space available to use on other positions.

BTW I dont see Gus being released while Linehan is our OC.

Possibly. Saban identified upgrading QB as a priority. That does not *necessarily* mean nabbing an immediate starter. If a developmental player, it could be a rook or a young FA.

gus restructuring = rookie qb

gus is a gunslinger, so is jay cutler

there you go, you learn from the same style of player and that will make cutler successful
