Alright guys,

I can't speak for Peyton, or for his medical team...but, I have had cervical fusion surgery, and thought that some of the Manning fans out there could use some perspective on this. About 3 years ago, the discs on my neck were severely screwed. This (maybe) from intense physical activity. I was used to the 25-mile runs through forest trails... Eventually, on one run, I fell. And that was that. Symptoms onset almost immediately. Neck pain, pain radiating down arms, muscles losing strength. Spinal cord beginning to get really messed up. Sometimes "screaming" pain.

3 months later I was operated on. Anterior Cerfival Fusion. They went in through the front of the neck, removed the disc, replaced it with a fine metal "cage" with a sponge inside. Also, bolted the 2 vertebrae together with a metal plate. The "sponge" was injected with Stem Cells that instructed my body to "build" bone in that spot.

So now....? The doctor was clear. That "spot" was stronger that it ever was before. My muscles, after about 7 months, returned to normal. And I have no "after-effects". Asked Doc if I should "take it easy now". He, emphatically stated "no". He said that I should continue to train hard and even skydive if I wanted to. There was no risk of re-injuring that particular spot since it was "stronger than before".

Who knows what will happen with Peyton. But, judging from my own experience...if I had to place a bet, my money would be on him returning.

Hope this helps paint a clearer picture of a murky situation. Cheers....

Sucks that happened to you brother. Glad to hear you made a full recovery!!!

That being said ...

Fantastic insight. It goes with out saying that no two cases are the same, and all football related thoughts aside, glad you made a full recovery!

Respect Trini! You sure the injury wasn't from too much grinding at Carnival :)

All jokes aside thanks for sharing your perspective, it helps level set some of the speculation.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I now have a different point-of-view to see the situation from.

I wasn't so lucky. Two ruptured discs, hip bone grafted to fuse three vertebrae and a titanium plate installed with six screws to stabilize the area. That was 15 years ago. I never regained full strength and have related numbness down my left arm and pain in my right triceps. I continue to do what I want but understand I will likely pay for it. Muscle relaxers and hydrocodone are my friend when things get really bad. It's great you had a full recovery but like you said, not all have the same results. No doubt procedures are better now and I'd guess Peyton had the very best handling his injury. Heck, your procedure sounds light years ahead of what my choices were. I hope he recovers and can handle the beating without the possibility of paralysis. But if I had his money and talent I'd stick to commercials and maybe even a comedy series. The guy can deadpan as good as anyone.

unfortunately that happened to you 15 years ago. now with all the breakthroughs in the medical world, stem cells and so forth, recovery is at a much higher rate.

That's pretty cool man.

Great for you that things went well and you had a full recovery.

Luckily with todays tech we can hope he can recover and hopefully still has the passion for football and won't give up. Even if he doesn't land in our team I hope he can still play.

Nice post. I have heard that your neck would be stronger but my guess is that you would have less mobility in it...I would assume its stiffer therefore if you fell the right way you could get hurt even worse....just some stuff that I heard.

Not sure I would want to be behind him after spinal fusion

What a hell of an ordeal to go through! So glad you went through the worst it had to offer and came out on top. You should pass your story along to Peyton!

Idk how that's falling the right way lol, but from what I've seen peyton can turn his neck pretty fine in the commercial behind the scenes video of the coin flipping thing, we will just wait and see we can't go by the media or "some stuff" on the internet, unless it's from the actual person

is amazing to me that so many people on this board want to count on someone who probably should never play again. I wish him the best but is time for us to get our own QB and stop trying to win with the QB's his team don't want anymore.

Ozzy rules!!

If Manning's cervical nerve was impinged long enough, it still has impairment and he will have weakness along that nerve distribution for a long time. Also, the fused segment is definitely strong....you have to worry about the segments above and below the fusion. Those segments become more susceptible to injury or instability. Let's say this guy is able to come back and show some strength.....but then he gets hit square by a 310 lb DT....BOOM......he causes a significant hyper stretch to either the level above or below the fusion.....he now has issues at those levels........we lose him around week 6.......we better have a back up plan!
