From a Fan that Has Had Cervical Fusion Surgery...a perspective

is amazing to me that so many people on this board want to count on someone who probably should never play again. I wish him the best but is time for us to get our own QB and stop trying to win with the QB's his team don't want anymore.

Ozzy rules!!

Are you his doctor?

I work in an operating room with neurosurgeons and did a cervical fusion today in fact. Glad you recovered fully, now that we have that established, every case is different as others have stated. Granted you shouldn't give up physical activity, I don't think a physician would recommend getting hit by 300 lb lineman for several months out of the year. Each hit is the equivalent of a car crash impact and I'm here to say one blindside hit and Manning could potentially be in alot worse shape than he is now. Mobility due to fusion decreases which in turn will increase the likelihood that Manning might not see that hit coming. Wish the guy the best but sometimes you have to put your safety and family first

I once tried this when people were calling Henne a "*****" for coming out of the game with a separated shoulder.

People that have probably never been hurt beyond a stubbed toe in their lives came out of the woodwork to say how
it's not that bad.

It was that bad.

I went from a 24 year old Soldier doing 135 pushups uninterupted to 10 days after the injury trying to do pushups and not even
able to get one. Perspective is not high on the list of importance at Finheaven....Or any fan board.

I wasn't so lucky. Two ruptured discs, hip bone grafted to fuse three vertebrae and a titanium plate installed with six screws to stabilize the area. That was 15 years ago. I never regained full strength and have related numbness down my left arm and pain in my right triceps. I continue to do what I want but understand I will likely pay for it. Muscle relaxers and hydrocodone are my friend when things get really bad. It's great you had a full recovery but like you said, not all have the same results. No doubt procedures are better now and I'd guess Peyton had the very best handling his injury. Heck, your procedure sounds light years ahead of what my choices were. I hope he recovers and can handle the beating without the possibility of paralysis. But if I had his money and talent I'd stick to commercials and maybe even a comedy series. The guy can deadpan as good as anyone.

15 years ago might as well be 50 years ago.

The rush of the computer age has affected everything. Minimally invasive procedures, through very small incisions and computer controlled/assisted micro cameras have changed everything. Stem cell research, and so much more. It's a whole different world now.

I am guessing very few of us withstand blindside hits by speeding locomotives at our workplace - regardless of what the Drs say it is a huge risk when you already have that kind of dough stored away

I had heard though that the issue goes beyond that and the real question lies around the damage that was done to the nerve that controls his tricep (throwing arm). Not sure if that is always the case with this type of injury or not but from the sound of things coming from nfl network/espn, the tricep issue is the bigger problem.
Anybody know anything about this?

In my opinion it dosnt come down to "if: he recovers to %100 but "when" and for how much! He has to be cleared to play way before FA. If he isnt fully healed in a month I think we go a difererent direction. But then we have Ireland as a GM... what he does is anyones guess... even his.

I had a two level cervical fusion done. Plate with 6 screws. I can tell you that there isn't a day that goes by that i dont have neck pain. I can still do things but know i will pay for it after. Everybody is different and the bodies ability to repair itself also varies. The extent of damage prior to the surgery is also a big factor. Your dealing with the spinal cord, i couldn't imagine taking hits from defensive players in the nfl. I hope manning recoversand is able to play. The problem is, the true test will be to see how he holds up in game action and for how long, and thats going to come after you invest a lot of money and time into him. It's a risk, with a possible huge reward, or huge failure. Would love to have Peyton play here, hope he gets healthy and back to playing.

The issue really isnt going to be the Neck itself, that should heal stonger then before. Its going to be the nerves in his arm as a few of you stated.
