From now on I'm just going to call Vernon Carey IHOP

I'm not sure I meant to give the impression that Carey "has trouble" with the outside speed rush. Every OT in the league "has trouble" with the outside speed rush. You have 330 pound men going up against 270 pound men built like basketball players who have speed to move forward that first 10 yards almost as fast a RB. Every OT in the league is at a disadvantage.

Where Carey has the most trouble I've seen so far, is outside-in moves. He got outright beat by Alex Brown on one such move, and nearly got beat again by Hayward except he managed to recover just in time and club Hayward into the dirt from behind.

Thanks for the compliments.
and getting beat with an outside-in amounts to nothing more than balance...very correctable under the right tuteledge.

Excellent analysis CK.

BTW what took you so long to see the game?

20. Run left. IHOP releases out while a tight end bliocks the DE. Poor Terry Cousin gets the unlucky duty of going against IHOP. Lucky for him, Morris decides to bounce out to the left which is Cousin's escape route from the clutches of IHOP. Unlucky for Cousin, IHOP was still hungry, and wanted to try the blueberry syrup this time as he mows Cousin down from behind. This one was vehicular homocide. Investigations are underway. A+ (pancake)

This was my favorite part!!!!:rofl3:

mmm IHOP... good post though, still didn't get to see this game :( but im loving the reports on the overall line improvements and careys as well

Or as Carey said to a reporter yesterday apparently, "If you move your feet, you can't be beat"

Against Brown the outside-in worked to where IHOP wasn't able to recover and take Brown out. It was only a 3 step drop slant pass so nobody paid for it. Against Hayward, he was able to recover and knock Hayward into the ground about 2 or 3 yards in front of where Gus had set up to pass. So, either IHOP showed some improvement, or Hayward just isn't as fast as Alex Brown.

I'm waiting to see how IHOP does against a true speedster like Freeney...someone with a good spin move. Freeney probably has the best spin move in the game as a passrusher. Should be interesting.

"If you move your feet, you can't be beat."

"Don't bite on the fakes, and chow down on pancakes"

Heh.

Well just to let you know... I wrote in my report from camp yesturday that JT tried to stunt outside-in... and IHOP knocked him to the ground...

Vernon Carey - Continues to impress... I was tellin my brother about him and told him to watch Carey go against JT and Carey backed me up. That play Carey dropped into pass blocking. JT tried to stunt inside and Carey knocked him to the ground. He didnt get beat at all today and showed alot of power when run blocking... He just plows ahead...

Nasty

I mean, the knock on Carey wasn't that he didn't have potential. People here labeled him as a bust just because Wanny had some sort of problem with throwing a rookie in as a starter (regardless of talent).

The knock on Carey was that he didn't hustle 100% of the time and took plays off. That's easy to do when you have a Wanny/Herm Edwards as a coach. It's not so easy to do under Nick.

He reminds me a little of Wright, in that he always had the potential, but needed a fire under his somewhat mammoth *** to motivate him to be his best. He's a LOT farther along than Wright in this process, however. They aren't Roth/JT/ZT kind of guys who just go out and hustle on every play. As long as Saban is coaching both of these guys and they BELIEVE in his system, they'll excel because they have tremendous natural talent.

These are both players who will excel in this system but (lucky for us) wouldn't do as well elsewhere.

Actually, I think the commonly held view became that he was low on potential, which is why people slated him merely for right tackle instead of left, and eventually people slated him for right GUARD because they thought he was more of a "lunch pail" type. That is precisely why I'm astounded to see him playing like he is at left tackle where you absolutely need those quick feet just to survive, and all the sudden we find out he's got a speed/power combination to rival some of the top LT's in the league??? Say what???

The nickname IHOP is hiliarious. Everytime you mentioned it I laughed. I'm at work, people walking by were asking what I was laughing at. The syrup comments were great. That is terrific analysis CK. Love hearing his playing well.

Heh. I have to admit. The part about mowing Terry Cousin down from behind, vehicular homocide, and investigations underway made me crack up just typing it. But even funnier was the play itself, cuz that's pretty much exactly what Carey did. Cousin thought he was gonna get away from Carey and make the play on the ballcarrier, but Carey just steamrolled him from behind. Must have sucked for Terry. I like Terry Cousin too, lol.

LOL. You know one thing that kind of burns me is when I watch this guy I get the feeling that he needs to be given like WAY MORE responsibility, like you've got a Hummer in the garage (the old style, not the wussy H2 crap) and you just use it to commute to and from work.

This guy doesn't need anyone to come out and CHIP on his defensive end. That's insulting to IHOP. He also doesn't get a whole lot of run plays in his direction.

Seeing him play makes me excited over the passing game man. Finally I know that we can drop back 7 steps on a REGULAR basis and not have to worry about getting the QB blindsided. Heck, on Carey's worst play of the night, he gave Frerotte a full 5 seconds on a shotgun play on 3rd and 15.

If anyone ever installs some protection schemes up the middle to prevent DTs from running amuck on our interior OL, then you just can't complain that our QBs don't have time to throw.

That is great news of his success... I think (hopefully) the reason they are not giving him too much right now, is two fold... ONE)not show too much too early. Even oline schemes. TWO)he is young, and learning to play in the NFL, lets build his confidence slowly.

Yeah, I know. I'm just impatient. We've got a sherman tank sittin in the garage and I wanna go off-roading with it.

Nice one for this thread. Alot of thought and observation went into that. Im interested in Carey cos i felt he didnt get the chance he deserved last season. Great read. Im rooting for Carey and going by what ive read he coming along just fine.
