Miami’s cap problems start with the contracts for left tackle Jake Long and linebacker Karlos Dansby. The duo, arguably the team’s best players on each side of the ball, both have contracts well in excess of $10 million per year.

Specifically, Dansby’s contract will count $11.325 million against the 2012 salary cap, while Long’s contract will have him counting $12.8 million against the cap.
But Miami’s problems with the cap go deeper than just the contracts of Dansby and Long. In fact, the cap costs of Miami’s ten most expensive players represent more than 50 percent of the actual cap costs for the Dolphins in 2012.
The problem is, of the Dolphins high-priced players, the next two who have produced at high-level for the Dolphins in recent years has been running back Reggie Bush and Yeremiah Bell.
Past those two, who coincidentally are the next two highest paid players on the team, the top team paid players for the Dolphins is largely a group of average to decent NFL players. The list includes quarterback Matt Moore, Anthony Fasano, Tony McDaniel, and Richie Incognito.

This shows a couple of things. That there are WAY TOO MANY FREE AGENTS on this team and not only did we make a mistake in draft Jake Long with the 1st pick in the draft, we also allowed him to hold us up for a much too big contract.

washington redskins are penalized 36 million for the next two years....just to compare.

This is absurd. Jake Long is the best OT in the NFL. WTH do you think he is going to get paid??

It would be sensible and great if Miami could restructure Dansby and Long and at the same time extend them a few more years.

that's not jake longs fault...thats the old cba and the rediculous rookie contracts that were given out under its fault...and jake long if i recall correctly relative to the players drafted right behind him that year took less money than they signed for...

Jake Long's contract is fine. Top notch LT's get paid that much. We only got burned by not having him cheaper on a rookie deal.
Long - 11.2
Trent Williams - 13.35
Joe Thomas - 11.9
Jason Smith - 10
Jordan Gross - 9.33
Dansby's contract however is way too much.....12.8M is too much for a guy who doesn't change games like Ray Lewis, Urlacher, etc. did for their teams. Demarcus ware makes 10.3, Urlacher 9.2.

Contracts above are the cap hit in 2012.

Problem is you don't need an elite left tackle to win the super bowl
the past few years have shown

Exactly, i dont know about you guys but there nobody else i would want better than Long protecting the blindisde...he is the Peyton manning of Left Tackles, and deserves to be paid like so....pay the man!

The problem is we r paying Bell, fasano and mcdaniels way too much to be decent players. Bell is making over 6 mil and besides making tackles he doesnt do anything else. Mcdaniels is a backup and Fasano is a below average TE which we r paying over 4 mil for. If we were o cut those 3 players we would be saving about 12 or 13 mil and would be perfectly fine with the cap. If we managed to restructure 2-3 guys like long and starks and bush we would be able to probably save another 6-8 mil and be in great shape to bring in 2-3 FA and sign our entire draft class with no problem. moves have to be made but its not as bad as the article makes it seem,.

If Flynn signs, I don't think it's a coincidence that he'll be the only big name FA signing this year. Philbin came from a team that built heavily from the draft and I'm sure he's going to try and do the same. With rookie contracts being cheaper, I'm confident they can find play makers in the draft without having to go sign big FA contracts.

This is the final year of Bell's contract. He'll come off the books after this season.

trade Dansby for some high draft pick, drafts Kuechly with the first pick and a goood WR with the pick from Dnasby, with the free cap space sign Flynn& Winston, then we are good to go.....ok, now I turn off the xbox&Madden

anyway, joking aside, do you know if dansby or long are gonna to restructure or something?
