Yes, we know it's the off-season with threads like this.

But I'm a little bit fascinated with the fullback situation we're looking at right now. When Parcells got here, Reagan Mauia was the 'phins fullback. He obviously the kind of size you look for, but to this point had really been more of a receiving fullback than anything. Then of course, with his Taxi Driver moment a month or two back, he really made himself expendable.

So one of the first players that Parcells and Ireland signed was Boomer Grigsby. But Grigsby's really more of a special teamer than any particular position. He's not even a real fullback. You could conceivably move him back to linebacker and let the other three guys battle it out.

Then you draft this Lex Hilliard guy. Hilliard's videos are just fun to watch. He really does look like Marion Barber or Earl Campbell. Course, that's against 1-AA competition. (FCS or FBS or whatever) Still, the FO spent a draft pick on him, so you have to expect that he's likely to make the team.

Then there's Rolly Lumbala. Seems like the rumors linking this guy with Miami going into the draft were true. Obviously he's undrafted, so his chances of making the team are pretty low, but I wouldn't count him just yet. He's arguably the best pure fullback prospect of any of the above players.

So at least two of these guys will be gone by August. I suppose it's possible that Grigsby moves back to linebacker since there's still not a whole lot of depth there even with all the signings.

edit: How did this end up in the draft forum?

I'm hoping Hilliard can step up and win the job (keep in mind I'm biased being a fellow Montanan). You may sacrifice some blocking, but I think you'd get a capable runner and receiver, moreso than Mauia in my opinion. I admittedly don't know as much about the other two guys.

I loved Owen Schmitt and thought he would have made a great FB for us, in the mold of Daryl Johnston.

i dont think Hilliard gets it, isnt he like 5'11??? pretty small, especially for the kinda guy BP likes.

Mauia is 6 feet, just a tad bit taller...but also like 270. if he has speed, he can be an incredible bruising fullback at 270

Glad to have a fellow "biased" Montanan aboard :hi5:

MAUI is so over-rated on these boards. He ran through a wall, big deal, it was dry wall ..he is way to slow to do anything but block. He can't get open. A one trick pony. ya need more than that OUT OF YOUR FULLBACK.

I think Hilliard will be the only FB on the roster next season and be the emergency 4th RB.

How are Hilliard's hands? Can he catch and turn up field quickly? Perhaps, the Dolphins' offense has a role for a Richie Anderson type of fullback. This would also depend on Ronnie Brown's ability to split out and line up as a WR as Curtis Martin was able to do with the Henning/Parcell's offense.

If the Dolphins plan to run a similar offense, then they are likely to have another FB as the lead blocker with Mauia, Grigsby, and Lumbala competing for it.

didnt BP say he didnt want "thugs or hoodlums"? Mauia is both so im not banking on him being a dolphin too long..

He's got good hands, they didn't use it a whole lot at Montana, but i he didn't drop many at all and he turns up the field pretty quick for a big guy

Yeah, certain players become over valued favorites, typical here and elsewhere, normally due to a unique trait or personality.

I'd be surprised if Reagan is on the team in '08, due to ability not the recent episode.
