Both my brother and myself are big Dolphin fans and have not missed a draft in the last 10 years. It just so happens his 8yr old son(and my Godson) has his Communion on the same day as the Draft. The church is at 1pm and all my family will be there so I won't have anyone in front of a TV telling me who gets picked. Right before I leave the house to the church I am watching the draft with my 2 boys(ages 7 and 4) and Cleveland is picking. I know that this pick(or so I thought) would change how the top 10 will go so my boys are chanting"Don't pick Quinn!" as the Browns pick Thomas and me and my boys do a Quinn dance. So off to church we go hoping that Quinn is still there.
So we are sitting in the Church during the ceremony and God forgive me but my mind is on who Miami will be picking. Around 1:50 my 4 yr old is getting really antsy in church so I volunteer to take him outside for some air. My wife shoots me a dirty look knowing I am going to call someone or get to a radio. I get my 16yr old nephew on the phone and tell him to turn on ESPN and read me the picks. He tells me picks 1-8 and tells me Miami is picking right now. I asked him was he sure Quinn was not picked yet and he says he is sure. So here I am on the Church steps waiting for the pick. It seemed like an eternity when he tells me some guy named Ginn was picked and everyone is going crazy(I feel sick). I go back into the Church and my brother who is in front of the Church looks at me as I try to explain in hand signs what just went on. The Nun who is in charge of the Communion is right next to him shooting us looks as I try to figure out hands signs for "quinn was still there at 9 and we took Ginn". He is not getting what I am saying.
As I go up for Communion I pass his pew and and whisper as fast as I could what happened...with the NUN prepping me for hell. His son sitting next to him gets what I am trying to say and says to his Dad..Quinn lasted to 9 but the Dolphins picked Ginn!...my brother says that can't be right. He keeps on looking at me at the back of the Church with this puzzled look...and I am nodding. The communion ends and he gets to the back of the Church as quick as he can to finally get the news from me before he starts taking pics. He quickly states how confused he is about Why we passed on Quinn but says Ginn is a good choice...just not what we expected. He walks back into the Church as I see the NUN eyeing me again..and I high tail it to my car as my 7yr old is saying loudly"Its ok Daddy..Quinn might get picked later!".
Sorry this is so long but it did make me laugh thinking about it and seemed to sooth my angst about the pick and after the fact...with the whole draft done...does not seem as catastrophic as being on those Church steps knowing we passed on Quinn.
