So now that Jake Long is the highest paid lineman in the NFL, does that totally rid us of our leverage to keep Carey on our contract negotiations we will have to do with him soon? Carey could now become very very expensive to keep.

u know what u right i think we just screwed ourselves if we need to resign carey

But he is also now a RT, who get paid less.

Yea but hes a RT that can play LT, so in the free agent market he would see LT money, which means he'll most likely demand LT $ in negotiations... or atleast somewhere in the median of the 2.

i dont think Carey will ask for a ton of money so i think we are good with him

Honestly guys, he's not that good, and his contract will not be based on Jake Long's.

He's a good player, but not a great one. He's not a guy that other teams are going to trip all over themselves to overpay. He's "just another guy"

Prepare for him to ask for ATLEAST 5 to 6 million a year . . . u almost have to sign him at that price . . . I'm think the eventual deal he gets will be over 6 million . . . the man is only like 26 and is in the beginning stages of the prime of his career . . . and he is a great RT that can play LT at an above average level.

We gave Smiley a 5 year deal worth 25 million . . . with 9 million in guaranteed money.

Smiley has been injured a bit and plays Guard . . . Carey has been heatlhy and can play BOTH tackle spots . . . hell when he was at RT in 2006 . . . there was a stat out there showing where he put up the best numbers at RT when he was there. He did good at LT as well . . . servicable . . . with Pro Bowl potential at RT

You are kidding yourself if u don't think he is not gonna get big bucks. This isn't Rex Hadnot or Damion Mcintosh we are talking about here.

but if you notice in the FA market these not great players have been getting great money.. i think he wants to stay and i think we will give him a offer that is good enough.. he is the type of linemen that our FO likes. He deserves every penny too he played hard all last year I didnt see him take many plays off and on a team that is really bad and your the only good spot on the o line that deserves something:hi5:

I would love to keep Carey. I finally feel confident for our Line's future. There's no point taking a step back now.

I really don't think you can be more wrong. I think many teams would line up to sign him, if not as a LT certainly for RT. Carey has gotten much better every year he has been in the league and is not far off from being a pro-bowler. Even as a LT he performed very well, especially when Ronnie was healthy and had some of the best run numbers for any LT. Sacks given up were fewer than Joe Thomas and many other pro bowlers. Here's a link with those stats. http://www.thephinsider.com/story/2008/4/9/193234/5294

yeah, but how about those hurries? lol

There will be alot of money invested in this OLine if we resign Carey . . . I think there is a chance while this draft is OLine heavy . . . and next years being OLine heavy . . . to grab a few young tackles and guards . . . guys who can come in a be great right away . . . and allow us the opportunity to unfortunately have a guy like Carey walk.

U have to pick your poison in this business . . . and Carey may be the man out when its all said an done.

Remember, this team has the option of franchising Vernon Carey if necessary. That being said, I think it's crucial that the Dolphins get Vernon locked up for the long haul. He may demand a little more money due to his versatility, but he could also give the Dolphins the "hometown discount" because he is a Miami kid, and may not want to move.

Regardless of what we believe Carey's worth to us is as a RT or LT, i will be difficult to resign him - as he will not come cheaply.

Remember, the Texans paid Wade some pretty good $$$ as RT ... and Carey is better than Wade ever was.
