After reading our new GM's press conference transcript and philosophy of taking a qb in every draft as well as Coach Saban's philosophy of building a team through the draft I'm curious on people's thoughts on the prospect of finding our next qb through the draft. The thought of this troubles me a little in that it would then seem that at some point in the near future we might have to take a step back and live with a season of growing pains as Buffalo seems to be doing this year given that the Marino's and Roethlisbergers are few and far between. I'm not sure how to feel about this and after giving it some thought I am surprised that we did not take a qb in this year's draft. I mean coming off a 4-12 season with low expectations seems like the best time to draft and start a young qb. I guess I am thinking about the Mannings, where they were brought in after losing seasons and given a year to grow into the job with little expectations for their team in contrast to Losman whose team was on the rise last year and he was expected to get them over the hump so to speak. So, if we have continued success this year or next either making the playoffs or being close, when do we bring in a drafted qb to play and allow them to struggle for a year? Don't get me wrong, I am glad that Coach Saban isn't treating this as a rebuilding year but I just wonder if we have to brace ourselves for a tough season ahead sometime.

Not if we are able to trade for Phillip Rivers this offseason.

...which I am all for.

Wouldn't you expect him to struggle as well with his first year of real full-time playing experience?

Exactly, Rivers is not a cure-all people.

Sooner or later we'll have to draft, and groom our future franchise QB {whomever that may be}. It's something that can't be avoided much longer unless somehow Rosenfels ends up being that QB....

PHINZ RULE THE EAST!!!

Billy Volek is not the answer either. I think we should go after an established quarterback in the NFL whoever that may be. I don't want another season like last year so if we do get a rookie I at least want him to sit on the bench a year and learn the system so hopefully he will be a little more prepared.

Dude get off the Volek bandwagon. Why arent the rest of the teams in the NFL going after him? He is a good backup QB, nothing more nothing less. We should go after Rivers. And if he struggles the first year? So what? QB's have to actually play to improve and get better.

volek is in line to replace mcnair. what makes anyone think they would be willing to release him or trade him

he's not even that good. but he's better than just about any rookie this upcoming year

How do you know he's not that good? He hasnt had a chance to prove himself. Drew Brees supposedly wasnt any good and look what happened to him last year! Some QB's require patient. Hell even Eli Manning is looking good right now, and a lot of people thought he wasnt going to amount to anything.

i'm usually right on the money when prospecting college QBs into pro QBs. i said rivers shouldn't have been drafted any higher than the 2nd round, so i'm sticking to that

Put whatever struggles Rivers would have up against the struggles a true rookie would have.

Thank you.
