not the same as years past ....

now NFL teams are able to cuts player at any point during the off-season

In the past Mcmichael, Kevin Cater would have become June 1 casualty
but instead of keeping a Cater or Mcmichael on your roster and trying to sign free agents .The NFL allow team to start trim there roster early then the June 1 cuts

So as far as free agent goes, what you see is what you get. This still wont stop teams for cut back on player who feel a drafted rookies
is better at a position which may cause a player to be cuts as well.

So KC are not obligated to cut Trent Green until the start of the season
(unless Trent Green contract call for KC to pay out bonus before the season Start
which i don't think is the case)

Doesnt KC owe Trent Green like a 7.2 million dollar base salary?

When does he have to be cut by for them not to have to pay that?

In every year since the CBA was first agreed upon, a fairly decent number of veteran players were cut after June 1 for salary-cap management reasons. For example, the Chargers once released safety Rodney Harrison after June 1 and he quickly became a New England Patriot. I don't believe there will be many players released after June 1 this season. In fact, there's a good chance there will not be any notable names on the street. There are two reasons why this may be the leanest year for June talent. One, because the league got a late start with the new CBA, the teams were given the opportunity to release players prior to June 1 and get the cap management benefit by declaring them June 1 cuts. Second, the added cap space has not pressured clubs' need to release players. An indication that this is true is just how few veterans have been asked to stay away from minicamp sessions.

In years past, if a team was intending to release a player after June 1, they simply asked him not to attend minicamp so not to incur an injury and become a liability to the team's salary cap. As one GM said to me this week when we discussed the differences in 2006 business with years past, he said, "What's left out on the street is probably all that's going to be available, so if you need someone, go get him next week."

With those words in mind, I found the following numbers of decent veterans per position still available. Some might need to be persuaded out of retirement, others can't pass a physical, some are simply just not good enough anymore -- but all were on an active rosters at some point last season. After the numerical breakdown, I'll get into the top 20 still out there looking for work.

If I'm understanding this correctly, the salary a player gets is prorated 1/16 and is paid each week in 16 installments. So until the season starts, The Chiefs aon't have to pay Green anything and can cut him at anytime in the season and not be financially responsible for games not played?

President/general manager Carl Peterson continued to insist Green would be welcome to play for the Chiefs next season. He at one point even referred to Green as the starter, though he later deferred on the matter to coach Herm Edwards.

Edwards has said Croyle will be given every opportunity to win the starting job.

Green, who previously indicated a desire to be traded to Miami, has considerable leverage in the matter. His scheduled salary of $7.2 million cannot be unilaterally reduced by the Chiefs.

By refusing to take a pay cut, he can put considerable pressure on the Chiefs and their salary cap. Counting his salary and various bonuses, Green costs the Chiefs more than $9.1 million against their cap.

That number would be greatly reduced if he is traded or released. But Peterson said the Chiefs could carry Green’s cap number through the end of the season and implied the Chiefs would not release Green, a move that would allow him to sign with Miami.

“I’ve said it before: He’s far too valuable to this organization … to simply say goodbye to him in that fashion,†Peterson said. “He’s under contract to the Kansas City Chiefs. We’ve never said from the beginning that he’s not here to compete for the starting job.

“I’m not going to make any predictions. I’m simply going to say again that he’s under contract.â€Â

The teams could still make a deal involving future draft picks or players. They narrowed their once considerable differences down to a couple of rounds, Miami offering a sixth-round pick and the Chiefs asking for a fourth. Steiner said at one point Sunday that he was optimistic about a trade being completed.

But it didn’t happen, and Green remained with the Chiefs.

Green is a "vested Veteran" and is guaranteed his entire salary if he is on an opening day roster.

This makes zero common sense to keep him on the roster if he won't be playing.... How does he have value to the team if his salary is a dead weight cap hit?

No salary during the preseason games?

KC can release Green just before the opening day roster is set, if they wanted to be anal and they wouldn't be on the hook for any of his salary. But, I doubt they would want him in training camp or on the roster during pre-season games, taking up a roster spot and taking reps, instead of using that valuable time for a young Qb they are grooming, i.e. Croyle.
