The 6-foot-8-inch Gaither weighed in just over 320 pounds and ran his 40 in times which ranged between 5.00 to 5.12 seconds, depending on whose stopwatch was read. His vertical jump was an impressive 31 inches, as was his 9-foot-3-inch broad jump.

Sources we spoke with said Gaither looked good during position drills, displaying solid footwork and good flexibility. The heat and a lack of conditioning did loom large as Gaither wore down as the morning went on.

Gaither completed just 16 reps on the bench press, a poor number that was expected.

he need to work on his stragth

He apparently incurred a small injury preparing for the workout which directly inhibited his bench pressing results. The scouts were aware of the injury and believed his results were in the anticipated realm.

That said, I still believe he's going in the 3rd.

Even Joe Thomas' less than elite numbers in certain categories didn't take away from his positioning. Gaither's size and speed will warrant a lofty pick.

Anyone know how his contract numbers will work? Is he subject to the same pay scale and contract terms as other 3rd rounders drafted in the vicinity of his pick?

I hope we invest a pick in him. I expressed my wish before in a post i did when he first declared for the draft. He was considered a top pick for next years draft. So to be honest with you, if his workouts were great, its a bargain to invest a 2nd round pick for a guy that would have been a top 10 pick in 2008. MHO

Thanks for the update Boomer. Do you think the Dolphins have any interest in throwing a pick out there to get him, particularly after the Green trade? And do you think he'd project as more of a RT or LT considering he played each position while at Maryland? Thanks.

If he is a top 10 pick next year, then it wouldnt hurt to give a 1st if thats what it takes to get him. His measurables are not that common for a tackle.

Hopefully a second is all we would need to give up though. I cant see any reason a team like the bears wouldnt throw a first out there to get him.

Gaither likely secures selection in supplemental draft

Gaither essentially went through a combine-style workout, which included positional drills that were run by an Oakland Raiders representative. He was able to do only 15 repetitions on the standard 225-pound bench press, having slightly injured his shoulder last week while preparing for Monday's audition.

Scouts clocked Gaither, who checked in at 6-feet-8¾ and 324 pounds, at between 4.98 and 5.14 seconds in the 40-yard sprint. He posted a vertical jump of 31½ inches, a broad jump of 9 feet, 3 inches, a short shuttle of 4.49-4.53 seconds and a cone drill of 7.12-7.25 seconds. The short shuttle and cone drill are change-of-direction drills.

Of the 42 offensive linemen who ran the 40 at the combine in February, only four posted faster times than Gaither's. And only six of the 37 linemen who participated in the vertical jump recorded better efforts.

And his strength...this shows me he is lazy and does not like the weight room other wise his numbers would have been much better.

And for everyone that says the low number of reps on the bench press
is nothing...Please the NFL had a number of drafted lineman that put up
high 30s and low 40s on the bench press so 15 or 16 reps is a
huge warning sign.

I would stay away...far away

The reports on him from his coaching staff are that he has good work habits for football, just that he wouldn't go to class. Is that lazy, stupid, arrogant, unmotivated? I'm not sure.

The injury is self reported so hopefully it is not a smokescreen for what he knew were going to be unimpressive bench press numbers. Though the long arm issue probably plays in here, long armed guys do worse in reps because of length, extension, etc.

He is in the supplemental for a reason and the average to poor history of supplemental picks is such that I doubt we use a first day pick on Gaither or anyone else. We will see what happens on Thursday.
