I wonder what AJ has on those throws that make receivers drop balls. It was the same last year when even Mc Mike dropped a few.

It's called "inconsistent recievers"....

Although I'm sure more then one person on this board will find a way to blame A.J. for the drops...

I think the appropriate synapsis is something along these lines:

1. AJ and Gus played acceptibly making some good throws but suffering from heavy pressure. Gus has a slight edge after last night, but it is very slight.

2. The OL is still very much a project. There were moments that they did an acceptible job, but they also let Brian Urlacher into the backfield untouched, a mistake they repeated with a different linebacker a few plays later. Run blocking was not a highlight for them, either. Be thankful Houck has 4 more pre-season games to work with these guys. Lot's of penalties with this unit.

3. Receivers were actually pretty good last night with Boston and Gilmore acting the hero's role. Chambers was his usual self and Booker was good. Of this group, only Thompson played the goat, missing a beautiful wide open pass from Feeley.

4. RB's all struggled.

On to the defense:

1. The Defensive line struggled to stop the run and wasn't particularly effective with the pass rush. Not a terrible unit, but they definitely have some work ahead of them.

2. Linbackers did pretty well. There was some over-pursuit and they need a little polish on the blitzing schemes, but overall they were the best part of the defense last night.

3. Secondary was definitely the weakest part of the D last night. Lots of deep passes and confusion. Madison made a brilliant pass deflection with the first unit that was wrongly ruled pass interference. Unfortunately Sam also whiffed on the RB during a beautifully executed blitz...he was unabated but simply overshot the play. Howard got lit up. Daniels showed good instincts but looked slow. He should do great once the scheme is tailored to him, but until then, expect a few speed burns. The safety position looks shaky with lots of confusion on assignments. This is Saban's specialty, however, so I expect this to shore up the quickest, assuming the proper talent is available.

Overall, the team is obviously still heavily entrenched in the learning phase and it shows. There can be substantial gains before the beginning of the season, but I would expect a somewhat shakey beginning to the season with dramatic improvement by the middle of the year.
