Gary Myers Handicaps Rex Ryan's Next Landing Spot

I opened the link and puked in mouth a little bit seeing Rex in Dolphin gear.

I don't think he'll get a head coach gig right away but he'd make a good DC which is the only part of the game he's any good at.
Maybe in Oakland under Tony :chuckle:

I'd give very strong consideration to Rex as the HC. The saying making chicken salad out of chicken **** applies here. Over his tenure he has been hindered on the offensive side of the ball, not only by a lack of knowledge, but by a lack of consistent QB play. Look at his secondary and see how far they have progressed from week 1 to now and keep in mind they have little talent there. He gets the most from his players which we have not seen since Shula. If you pair him with the right OC and get consistent QB play, you are a playoff contender instantly.

I like Mike Smith but if he winds up in Atl, that becomes a very good team.

As our DC, absolutely. I can't see him being a HC again. I just think he is way in over his head for the position. I hear your explanation though.

The thing with Rex is that he makes bad game management decisions and simply doesn't understand how to manage his offense. He calls defensive timeouts early in the half of a game that he's trailing because he is thinking as a DC first and foremost. He doesn't understand how his offense is going to need those timeouts to put points on the board in crunch time later. He's been a head coach for what, five years and he's still doing that?

Also, it was his decision to fire Brian Schottenheimer and replace him with Tony Sparano. I know Little Schotty isn't a fan favorite offensive coordinator, but he's competent and was doing good work with a bad quarterback. Tony Sparano had never even been an offensive coordinator before when Rex decided to make that switch, and the results were predictable.

In short, you can't make Rex your head coach because he simply doesn't get what's going on on one side of the ball. You will have a very good defense with Rex as your head coach, but you will have to get very, very lucky for your offense to be anything but a disaster.

A fair point and I am another one that thought firing Schotty was a mistake. It's evident that he was there best OC under Ryan. He is now getting good results from Austin Davis. Little Shotty is another guy I would give consideration as a head coach candidate.
