Obviously Gase is the coach and not the GM, but many on here, myself included believe he has some influence on the players picked up or drafted because of the players we have seen come in that he has familiarity with. How much of an influence do you think he has?

I think he has a good amount of influence according to reports I've read since he's been here.
I think ALL of the cuts has his stamp on them.
Also, he has said this is the roster he wanted, and what he has been working toward.

He has the final call on personnel, which means he has a huge say so on the draft picks and FA's.

Example:
We may not have the best GM, but I tend to believe that he wouldn't have thought Cutler was good enough for us that he could UNretire and make a difference. Cutler was ehire Gase wanted due to previous dealings.

Nobody knows for sure which is one of the major problems with this organization. Too many chefs. So now who do you blame for this disaster. I believe he has too much power over personnel. He gets what he wants especially when it comes to the the most important position on the team the QB. He got this reputation of being some QB guru from coaching Manning, Cutler and Tebo which is mind boggling. Manning was his own coach and could do whatever he wanted. If Gase wants a QB all he has to do is tell everyone and he will get him. Anyways until Ross guts the entire organization and gets one Football guy in charge making all the decisions we will never know. Unfortunately I can’t see Ross doing anything and would be shocked if he ever completely cleaned house. It’s absolutely ridiculous we are in this cluster!!

The GM's job is to draft the players the coach needs to run his offense and defense.

The coach has a tremendous impact in that area (explaining what he's looking for), but Grier picks the players and has final say.

Once they are on the 53 man roster, that is entirely controlled by Gase.

We disagree

I don't believe he has final say, but I do believe he has a lot of influence on the personnel drafted and picked up through FA. The problem to me goes deeper than that however, it almost seems to me like we pick up players in any manner because we need bodies, not necessarily a player that fits our scheme. (whatever that is) I take the TE position for instance, did the Dolphins need a blocking TE, a TE that finds the seams and can stretch the field or a TE like Gronk that can do both? I'm not saying I don't like the TE we drafted, but what exactly is the kind of team we are building or trying to build, what is the final product suppose to look like? Are we a running team or a passing team? I've gone off topic a little bit and I do apologize, but having final say or not means nothing unless you have some semblance of a plan.

"Grier picks the players and has final say." I think Gase is deeply involved in players selection and has final say on draft day. Grier and staff may narrow down the list, do the investigation, but "final say?" I don't think so.

We can't disagree on that, unless you know something I know.

That part of what I wrote is a fact, as published by the team on numerous occasions.

From the Palm Beach Post:

"And finally, clarity. The changes in organizational structure made by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross prior to last season have helped improve internal communication, external perception and, seemingly, results.

  • Gase has final say on the 53-man roster. But, of course, roster transactions are made after thorough consultation with Grier and Tannenbaum, the Executive Vice President of Football Operations.
  • Grier reports to Tannenbaum, whose most important job is to have a big-picture lens for the organization’s direction. Tannenbaum’s experience negotiating free-agent contracts, executing trades, and his experience as an agent are also beneficial to the organization.
  • Grier, Miami’s long-time director of college scouting, is the man with final say on draft choices. The draft is his baby. It is his show."

Well Grier hasn't done that good of a job imo. Is he really the one that drafted Gesicki over Goedert? That was a big mistake.
Is he the one that picked Harris? Another mistake.

Yup, and I'm still allowed an opinion. Here's a scenario> Miami is on the clock.
Gase: 'I can't believe Von Miller is still available. I'm desperate for a DE. Grab him.'
Grier: 'Sorry, it's my show and I really think we should get a backup for James and Jonathan Martin looks good to me. And since you have no say, . . . '
I don't doubt Grier ranks players (with Gase's and coaches' input), and I don't doubt he leades the draft room, BUT, no GM wants to be in the position of drafting Jonathan Martin over the HC's wish and have the HC tell the owner, 'yea, but I didn't want Martin and that's why we're 2-8. If only you would have let me pick Von Miller.'

Are you serious?

Look at the last three drafts again.

He has done a stellar job.

He picks Tunsil and Minkah and you bring up Harris?

He picks Xavien and you bring up the rookie Gesicki?

Agenda much?

Having an opinion on facts. Okey dokey. Someone has to pull the trigger. It's Grier.
