Gase: Sometimes defense not doing what they are coached to do

There was a play in the New England game last Sunday in which the Miami Dolphins defense had three players covering a receiver in the flat. And two Patriots receivers were uncovered on the second level. That, I can tell you with confidence, is the industry term for a bust. And it seems the Dolphins defense had enough of those against the Patriots last week as to suggest they regressed in that department because there were more in that second game than there were in the opener at Seattle. And this is leading to a little frustration on the part of some coaches because it looks on tape and on TV as if the Miami system is flawed. Be honest, you watched that game and said, "New England receivers are running wide open." And so you blame the scheme. But coach Adam Gase said it is not the scheme. "...When the defense does get out there, we have to make sure that we’re all sound in our assignment," Gase said Wednesday. "It’s hard to evaluate and correct things, as far as schematics, if we’re not doing what we’re asked to do. There were a few times where we didn’t do exactly what we were coached to do, and now we have to go back and basically go through it and (say), ‘This is the details of what we’re doing on this defense.’ And then move forward from there. "But it’s hard to say, ‘Hey, this scheme is no good.’ We have to execute it first and then if we have some holes there, we have to adjust." Talk about growing pains. The Dolphins defense is currently in a situation where players have to do what they're coached to do, first. When that that happens, then coaches can decide if the scheme needs tweaking based on what happens on the field when the players correctly carry out their assignments. So this might take a while to get just right. And it's not just about the players getting their assignments right. Sometimes busts occur when techniques are not quite correct. So a player can be in the right place, but not play as he's been taught and ... boom ... LaGarrette Blount gets outside on sweep. Again. And again.

It's hard to overlook the image of Vance Joseph standing on the sidelines during several exhibition games, looking like a deer caught in the headlights.

I fear this job is presently too big for him. Hopefully he can grow into it rather than that he has Peter Principle'd out at the position coach level.

yes, if many players are out of position then its on both coaching and player...shouldn't happen to this extent at this level.

I think I've seen this movie before. Although to be fair I think we hold the record for brain farts per game, or BFG's. You Doom guys leave it alone. I know what you're thinking.

As a fan, I like that Gase is actually really honest about this stuff with the media.

But there's a fine line here between being honest and throwing players under the bus.

This is the reason I had hoped that Gase would have hired a DC with experience running an entire defense. As a rookie coach whose expertise is offense, it wasn't the best idea to get another inexperienced guy and elevate him to the DC position. I'm hoping Joseph is able to pick it up as the season progresses.

To be honest it's not like we have that much talent on our defensive unit. But yeah, I expect better things from VJ. And lucky for us, we won't face NE every week.

Well hum at least this spells this is not just the talent on the field not performing but more a teaching issue which can fixed much easier.

I don't get the replays on this thread. Gase is saying the players are not doing what they're supposed to do but I see people here blaming the DC?

Ozzy rules!!

Can it? I seem to have heard this same thing from Philbin, heard it from Campbell too. Players not doing what they've been taught/told/assigned to do. Perhaps the Dolphins lead the league in dumb players. Too many guys freelancing and not enough guys playing a team concept.

To me, the GOOD news is mistakes SHOULD be coachable. 3 defenders on one receiver? dead ball fouls? I'd prefer that over Jamar Taylor with no mistakes. Now fans need to see VJ can coach the team up.

Communication breakdowns are completely expected with basically an entire new secondary unit, especially with how many youngsters are out there.

Throwing them under the bus is a bit dramatic. I don't think there is anything wrong with holding players accountable when they screw up.

Oh, the coach said I messed up, blah blah. Screw that, man up and take responsibility for your mistakes. If you screw up the scheme, own it and fix it.
