Gase sat down this past week with Barry Jackson, of the Miami Herald, to discuss his plans for the offensive line. What the coach had to say was telling: "[Getting] back to some old school [techniques] , let's lift, let's spend our two hours in the weight room, let's get these guys bigger, stronger and faster. So, that's been our big focus. I want to try to give [the trainer] as much time alotted as he's allowed to get these guys in position, where, when we do start, we can see a difference, we can see a difference physically, in our guys, as far as their strength and being able to come off the ball and move people."

We have long questioned the effectiveness and long term viability of the zone blockng scheme, and after watching former Dolphins offensive line coach John Benton's troops give up the most sacks in the NFL the past two years, while opening far too few holes in the running game, we decided to go back and take a look at Benton's tenure with the Houston Texans, when that team's offense was routinely among the league leaders. In our opinion, the number one Achilles' heel of the stretch-zone blocking scheme is that while it tends to work well when the opposing defense doesn't know whether a run or pass is coming, it also tends not to work very well late in games, when offenses need to implement a ball control game to run out the clock, or in 3rd and short situations.

And that my friends is better!

I tell this team is better already after making the Gase hire.

Excellent article. Thanks fisi.

I also agree that it's time to move back to a power drive scheme. Our power has been consistently poor and our technique has been horrible outside of Albert. Pouncey usually is good and James is OK but both lack the power to make it work. Pouncey pulling is awesome. James can wall off. But overall, they're overpaid and horribly underperforming. And our guards are atrocious, every single one of them.

The signs were there. All the OLs they brought in were bigger than the ones we have now. The lighter guys/zone blocking is a thing of the past, maybe.

If coaching was an issue as opposed to talent we will be able to see improvements immediately. I just believe it's a bit of both.

I wouldn't say thing of the past, but I do think it's quite clear that the previous staff put more thought into getting guys to play multiple positions on the OL rather than working on technique.

Tanny should start the season by buying his Oline a pair of Isatoners.. Hey, it worked for this guy!

I second that emotion and its at least encouraging to hear...bringing Incognito back would have been a start.

We can only hope and pray coaching and "being stronger" will help.

What I don't get is how our trainer(s) haven't been able to get them to be pumping and real iron and making improvements over multiple years pro (I don't believe this is the case for Turner- we know he is a bull)

I think it's a smokescreen for the draft. Gase has always been a ZBS guy, so I doubt he changes to power scheme here. More likely he wants to send the disinformation that we're looking for power guys in the draft so he can select his ZBS guys. Still, anytime a new coach correctly identifies our obvious lack of power along the OL and the problems it causes ... that's at least worth something. Admitting the problem is always the first step.

Has new O-line Coach Foerster made any comments about the system he will run? He has been around in the NFL for many years. Excuse my ignorance but what systems has he run? While Gase has always been a ZBS guy, Foerster was the man he specifically selected to be his O-line Coach. If we were radically changing O-line systems, then there would have been a much bigger turner over in player personnel to fit the new system.

Remember a team is a reflection of the head coach not the trainer or online coach..............Philbin.
