The 2016 Dolphins rank 30th in yards allowed yet rank 14th in points allowed. The 2014 Dolphins (started 7-6 and finished 8-8) ranked 12th in yards allowed yet 20th in points allowed.

This anomaly has to be attributable to turnover differential, I thought. False. The 2016 Dolphins are +4 in TO differential and the 2014 Dolphins were +2.

Well, then this anomaly must be attributable to the marked improvement of the offense. False. The 2016 Dolphins are +4 in scoring margin whereas the 2014 Dolphins scoring margin was +15.

The only explanation that remains is the improvement in coaching demonstrated by situational awareness and game management. And perhaps a little luck which is the residue of design.

It would be wonderful to actually qualify for the playoffs.. and maybe even have Tannehill back if he's got reasonable mobility. It would be a confirming portent of good things to come under Gase.

However realistically, with this defense, it's difficult to envision the team going too far into the postseason. I know the "Any given Sunday" mantra, but really, if a team coached by Rex Ryan with Tyrod ****ing Taylor as the QB can light us up, it's scary what a real coach and team could do.

You can't stat intangibles, and that's what the difference is. The biggest stat difference, I'd *suspect* is third down efficiency, but that doesn't really tell you what happens on the field. Again, focused drive / desire and confidence are the biggest differences which are immeasurable.

One more interesting stat. The 2016 Dolphins rank 21st in yards gained yet 15th in points scored. As a reference, the 2014 Dolphins ranked 11th in points scored.

So what is the significance when a team's points scored and allowed ranks are much improved relative to their yardage rankings (offense: 21 vs 15; defense: 30 vs 14)?

Given that it is not turnover margin, how much is coaching? how much is special teams hidden yardage or field position? how much is luck? Is it even quantifiable?

Very fascinating!

Philbin:
-cleaner locker room, fewer gum wrappers
-more field goals
-perfected the clueless look
-losing

Gase:
-winning
-perfected the soulless stare
-winning

You want to know the big difference? Watch what happened after Drake's TD. Who were the first two people to run up to him and celebrate? Damien Williams and Jay Ajayi. There's competition between everybody but there guys all root for each other.

we are winning when it count in December. we have better offense. plus we have winning record in afc east div...then we are not letting jets and bills spoil are season... philbin never could get over the 8-8 record

It simply means we're playing better red zone defense than before. Teams are still driving the field on us and racking up yards, but scoring less points.

The Dolphins scoring offense team rank this year is 15th; under Philbin in 2014 it was 11th. I totally agree that the team chemistry, heart, confidence - all of the intangibles - are better, but is that really the difference in determining the outcome of all of these close games?

Didn't the Bills drive 89 yards for the go-ahead 4th quarter TD?

Didn't the Cardinals drive 99 yards in the 4th quarter for a TD that made it a single possession game?

Perhaps the answer is Gase's aggressive play to win end of game strategy that is responsible for converting these close games into wins.

Too many just fixate on the statistics and try to analyze in great detail. But Coach Gase has the team focused on winning. The contribution of many peripheral players as part of the winning mindset is significant. The players are having fun and have developed self confidence. Lots of plays don't come off but the players quickly put it behind and find something that works.
This team is not about great statistics. At the end of the day just one stat (win vs loss) counts for each game.

Gase has encouraged a dog fight mentality in the team.
Philbin was arrogant. Didn't want his authority questioned.
Gase welcomes ideas and thoughts. Yes he has final say, but he'll fairly analyze each suggestion.
Philbin would kill a good idea, if it wasn't his.
Philbin wasn't respected.
Gase is.
Now let's get a more talented roster.
Gase seems to be turning the team around. Making it a squad that has a ton of fight.
