Two years ago, Giants coach Tom Coughlin widely was believed to be in grave danger (is there another kind?) of being fired.

So Coughlin underwent a stunning late-career transformation, and his new approach helped the team dig out of an 0-2 start (during which they gave up 80 points), culminating in an unlikely Super Bowl win.

Two years later, Coughlin and the Giants have put together precisely the kind of season that would have gotten him fired in 2007.

And with Coughlin, 63, having only two years left on his contract, the Giants have to look at the team's late-season meltdown, featuring a Week 17 game in which it appeared that they weren't even trying to keep it close, and the Giants have to decide whether now is the time to make a change.

Did you hear his press conference after the game.. He sounded like a little whiney cry baby saying something to the tune of, hey.. you guys blame the coach for everything around here, so here I am, come on, blame me..

He definitely should be, I can't remember the last time I saw a team completely quit the way they have BUT he does have a ring from just 2 years ago so that likely buys him another year.

I see no reason to fire him. The guy has lead a successful program and I really despise how one average year gets coaches who have had some success fired. And then they will turn the program over to some other guy who will fail to meet expectations and is probably just a bit worse than the guy before, and he will get fired.

Sometimes people have to accept that teams didn't have a good season and move on. If a coach has lead a team to success before, he should get a chance to weather through the mediocre times and prove that he's not capable of getting there again before he's just shown the door for another question mark.

The Giants figured to have a poor season. Keep in mind that the year after being dethroned is historically a down season. Only 3 teams in NFL history have ever won the title the season after being dethroned -- a Halas Bears team in the '40s, Switzer's Cowboys in '95 and Belichick's Patriots in '04.

It's actually been less of a trend in the past 15 years or so. Last year the Colts won a ton of games in a row then lost in the first round. For maybe 20 years during the '70s to mid '90s you could count the playoff victories on one hand.

It's another trend the media never mentions. In fact, it's common for that team to be picked for the Super Bowl, because it's the second to last champ anyone remembers and it's chic not to pick the defender. Meanwhile, the defending champions have a far superior record in terms of number of titles.

The third year away from a championship is often a very good year. The team finally makes necessary personnel changes after being reluctant to do so.

Keep in mind that outside of that fluke SB run 2 years ago Coughlin hasn't won a playoff game w/ the Giants.
