Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Gibson, a projected starter at the beginning of the season, wasn’t on the 46-man active roster for last week’s Chicago game. He was a healthy scratch. And that might be the case again this week for the Jacksonville game.

It seems as though Gibson has fallen out of favor with coaches for some reason. But he didn’t offer a firm answer when asked if that was the case.

“I don’t know,” Gibson said. “I guess you have to ask the coaches that.”

Asked how it came to this point, Gibson, a sixth-year player who had 30 receptions for 326 yards and three touchdowns in seven games last season before being sidleined with a knee injury, seemed perplexed.

“I don’t know,” he said. “You’ve got to ask the coaches that.”

Gibson also didn’t have a firm answer when asked what he could do to get back in the coaches’ favor.

“Nothing, probably,” he replied.

And then he smiled.
Gibson said he’s “not really” of the mindset to ask coaches about his status and said “we’ll see” when it comes to being active for the Jacksonville game.

Gibson said he could contribute, if given the chance.

“I can play,” he said. “There’s no doubt that I can play. It’s not really my call.”
Gibson, who missed the Green Bay game with a hamstring injury, said he was healthy for the Chicago game.

But he said he wouldn’t ask coaches about his playing status for the week. He said he’ll just allow the situation to play itself out.

“Honestly, it’s a decision that was made,” he said, “and there’s nothing I can do.”

He can still be a productive member of this squad. Imo it's a mistake to keep him inactive if he's healthy

Agree. He should be contributing. Maybe they felt comfortable to give him the extra week rest.

Might as well trade him or Mathews. Could use a RB or TE

When you're able to kick some ass on the road with good players not even able to get on the active roster that is a good problem to have. Having said that ever since Moreno trolled us I don't know how seriously we can take this stuff anymore, clearly they aren't allowed to talk about injuries so if they give you anything its probably a flat out lie.

totally agree, we have crazy depth at WR...we can afford to be extra cautious to give him extra time to recover.

I don't agree with his mentality about not asking the coaches about his playing status, at least once to find out what's going on. But I really don't like his response to not knowing what he can do to get back in their good graces. The answer should have been to work harder in practice and to make them put him on the field. That's the mindset that all of these guys should have. This guy should be thriving in this system and I hope the coaches aren't planning to stop using him.

Well there ya go Gibson, from the Landry starting thread...

The Dolphins depth chart lists three wide receivers on the first-team offense, and Landry has replaced Brandon Gibson alongside Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline.

Head Coach Joe Philbin, who has said many times he has been impressed with Landry’s play speed, said the move was not a reflection on Gibson.

“I like Brandon,” Philbin said. “If I’m not mistaken, before he was injured a year ago, on third down he was one of the best receivers in the National Football League. His conversion rate was outstanding. He’s a smart football player. He’s got good hands. It’s not really necessarily an indictment of Brandon, and Brandon I know is going to contribute here this season. I’m confident he will.”

If Philbin loves Gibson but is impressed with Landry, the answer isnt to deactivate Gibson. Instead, we should be trading or deactivating Brian Hartline.

Go cover a damn kick or punt. That would help the team.

I agree w dolfan that I'm not a fan of that mindset. Lacks hunger, determination....I know he plays hard, most do, but saying "I don't know" is just a way to brush the question off....there's only two answers to that question it's either a) not healthy enough to play or b) someone deserves the spot more than I do.....and he already said he was healthy.

I think Gibson's role is a little less defined now that Landry is starting to make plays from the slot. Landry has the YAC that everyone on this board clamors for, and a lot of us pinned him for eventually taking snaps from Gibson after we drafted him. No issues with it here. I like Wallace, Hartline, Landry, and Clay primary targets. Let Gibson come in on heavier WR sets or as a depth guy. It's hard for me to even put him clearly above Matthews given what he's shown in his past through limited play.

Let's not forget what Gibson was before he came to Miami, and that is by no means a shot at Gibson. Just want to keep the perspective that him losing snaps isn't exactly a big red flag. The inactive thing though, there's gotta be something else going on...

This. Kinda shows Philbin is a terrible HC

To be honest, I like his attitude. He isn't being selfish and creating a scene. He says he is ready to go. He is a good receiver and injuries happen. I am glad that he is ready to contribute when called upon and not making a big deal about it. Team player attitude to me.

Yes I kinda of see it more this way also. There are several that have said he should say he was still injured if he was, but that is not what coaches want to hear. It makes him look weak if he comes out and says "yeah I was able to play but not 100%". What he was saying was probably his best line. We have options and he doesn't play special teams, and he is really good but we have two other really good slot WRs also. So he isn't THAT big of an upgrade, so if he was 95% instead of 100% why not give him another week.

Now having said that if this continues then yeah we have a problem. Personally I like the way he handled the question. We have to remember that players are talking off the cuff. They can make one mistake answering a question out of anger and it cost them big time. He was trying to answer in a way that caused as little trouble as possible but still let everyone know he was willing and ready to play. That is the way I see it.
