It's Only Happened ONCE!
At the end of an afternoon in which the Dolphins defense was uneven and struggled to stay on top of San Diego’s receivers, the pressure ratcheted up to the highest degree.
In the final minutes of a tie game, Philip Rivers fired away as he tried to give the Chargers a chance to win, and they were on the cusp of field goal range as he dropped back. Everything hinged on this throw. He dropped back and thought he had an open man cutting toward the middle of the field, but Miami linebacker Kiko Alonso jumped the route for an interception.
He was gone.
Alonso immediately accelerated and outran everyone to the end zone to give the Dolphins a stunning 31-24 victory Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium. The threat was squashed, and Alonso’s 60-yard sprint lifted a team that staggered to a 1-4 start to its fourth straight win, the longest streak for this franchise since 2008....
...Belief is back, and so are the Dolphins. A season once teetering on the brink of insignificance has been redirected toward making a run at the playoffs. They are a game and a half behind Denver for the final spot and have two underwhelming opponents up next, starting with next weekend’s game at Los Angeles.
The pick-six by Alonso was one of four interceptions for Miami in the fourth quarter, the first time the team’s ever done that.....
....The fact that this secondary is still standing is a testament to their grit. Their leader, Reshad Jones, went down for the season in Week 6 with a torn rotator cuff. Promising rookie Xavien Howard has been out five games with a knee injury, and the team doesn’t know when he’ll return.
