[h=3]Ryan Mathews to Miami after Eagles draft Ezekiel Elliott[/h]
When the Eagles and Dolphins were discussing their earlier offseason swap, it would make sense if Miami's Mike Tannenbaum had inquired about Ryan Mathews. The running back would fit nicely next to Jay Ajayi in South Beach. At the time, Eagles executive Howie Roseman was more interested in unloading DeMarco Murray. After saddling the Titans with that contract, Howie let it be known he planned to hang onto Mathews. Ol' Mastermind Roseman, however, was just slow playing his hand. All along he coveted Ezekiel Elliott, the flashy running back out of Ohio State. After Chip Kelly traded away LeSean McCoy, Elliot will refill the missing backfield pizzazz.
When Elliot falls to the Eagles at No. 8 -- genius moving up by Howie -- Roseman will be free to put Mathews back on the trade block. After the first round ends on Thursday, April 28, Roseman will immediately call Tannenbaum and the two will hash out a late-night deal to send Mathews to Miami for a conditional third- or fourth-round pick. Philadelphia will throw Roseman a mid-May parade. -- Kevin Patra

I would rather wait and find someone in the draft.

Ryan Mathews is one of those frustatingly talented players that never seems to be able to stay healthy, but when he is healthy he is a play maker.

In his time in the league he has only played one full season, and in the others he missed 4, 2, 4, 10, and 3 games. That's not really the kind of running back you can build your offense around because he misses games, but at the same time he is clearly a talented running back capable of making big plays. In 2011, he rushed for over a thousand yards and 6 TDs at nearly 5 yards per carry, he also contributed 50 receptions and 455 yards - this was in fourteen games. In 2013, he rushed for 1,255 yards and 6 TDs at 4.4 yards per carry, and added 26 receptions, 189 yards, and 1 TD - this was in sixteen games. So as those two seasons show he's got the talent to be a starting running back in this league, but the flip side is that 2012 he was hindered by injuries and wasn't the same back, likewise in 2014 he was hindered by injuries and wasn't the same back. So that inconsistency is what frustrated the Chargers and led to them letting him walk last off season, but last season in the Eagles' committee he managed to have some big plays and show flashes of the play making running back he has the talent to be.

So I'm torn on the issue of Ryan Mathews. On the one hand he is not someone you can rely on to become your starting running back because he's only played one full season and had issues with injuries and inconsistency. But on the other hand, he showed last season with the Eagles that as the number two back he is very capable of stepping onto the field and making plays, he also proved he could step in and start when Murray missed time. His next two cap hits are $4 million and $5 million, that's not really the money you should be paying for a number two running back. That said, if we like Ajayi but don't feel confident in him being the bell cow, then maybe we could look at pairing Ajayi with a veteran like Ryan Mathews if we don't have to give up much to take his contract on, and in turn we might restructure it, because by acquiring Mathews he gives us another play maker for the offense. He might not be the type of guy to start and throw into a bell cow type role, but in a one-two punch he could be a viable addition, much like someone like Arian Foster could be a viable addition in a one-two punch with Ajayi (or another running back), because we don't need one guy to carry all the burden, we just need running backs capable of making plays in the passing and running game - and while we may scoff at Ryan Mathews, he has shown at times in his career that he is capable of doing that, much like Darren McFadden who found a home in Dallas to utilize some of his potential.

In the end I would probably not want to see us give up a third or a fourth for Mathews. If we could get him for a sixth or seventh round pick, maybe he's worth taking a punt on if we can afford the cap hit. But I don't see that moving happening and I think we'll address the position in the draft.

3rd or 4th for Matthews would be a desperate and moronic trade. Matthews is worth no more than a 7th or conditional 6th.

Non-physical running backs in our division have it tough as was shown by Miller last year who didn't do jack **** in divisional games.

No thanks.

We need them strong and violent. No more softies...

Matthews is a good player when healthy. He was much better than D. Murray in Philly last year, but he's cursed. If there's a way to suffer an injury, Matthews will find it. His contract is way too big for a player who can't stay healthy to save his life.

The funny thing is every time I hear his name Im reminded of the fact that the Chargers traded up with us to select him.

Another China Doll. Again, for an extra $1.5 mil/year these morons could have retained a high potential, durable, game-breaking RB in his prime instead of this embarrassing endless cluster****. #PennyWisePoundFoolish!

Why trade when the Eagles will just cut him.

Bro even then, I saw him here in San Diego and I would rather draft a RB.

Agree, not much special to him. At this point it looks like Ajayi is the alpha with either Foster coming in to last 6 games or some 3rd round draft pick at the two slot.

All over $1.5 for Miller
