Each year the Dolphins have made at least one trade to either move up or down in a given round, but only once has that deal involved the first round: 2010, when they traded out of the 12th overall spot (the Chargers wanted RB Ryan Matthews) and wound up drafting Jared Odrick 28th and Koa Misi in the second round (40th overall).

“It depends on what the other team is looking for,” Ireland said during his recent visit to the Sun Sentinel offices. “It’s all a matter of what that team that holds that spot that you’re trying to get up to is looking for. Right now I don’t know what they’re looking for. You obviously have to take into account the player you’re looking to acquire and how that player affects your football team.
“But right now, we’re still in the due-diligence process of trading back, trading up. That stuff doesn’t get going until a later date. We’re just trying to get our staff in place and try to get them all lined up right now from a players standpoint.”


Remember, there had been talk that to grab Andrew Luck at No. 1 overall, the Colts might be looking for an unprecedented THREE first-rounders in return. Put it this way, if you go by the traditional draft value chart and add up the Dolphins’ entire 2012 draft, you still wouldn’t have enough value (2, 291 points) to offset the 2,600-point value assigned to the second overall pick.

2008 — Traded down two spots in Round 3 with the Lions and picked Hampton DE Kendall Langford (third round) and RB Jalen Parmele (sixth). The Lions took RB Kevin Smith in Round 3. Grade: A

2008 – Traded up five spots in Round 4 with the Bears to select Utah State OG Shawn Murphy and also gave up a seventh-rounder (208th overall). Matt Flynn went one pick later in Round 7. Grade: D

2009 — Traded down two spots in Round 2 with the Colts and came away with Utah CB Sean Smith and Clemson S Chris Clemons with the additional fifth-rounder. Grade: A

2010 — Traded down 16 spots in Round 1 with the Chargers (Ryan Matthews) and came away with Penn State DL Jared Odrick (28th), Utah OLB Koa Misi (40th) and backup LB Tim Dobbins. Dolphins also moved down 16 spots in the fourth round and gave up a sixth-rounder (173rd overall) that was used on RB Anthony Dixon. Grade: B.

2010 — Traded up seven spots in Round 4 with the Cowboys to grab Iowa LB A.J. Edds. Also gave up a sixth-rounder the Cowboys used to select Notre Dame RT Sam Young (St. Thomas Aquinas). Grade: C

2010 – Traded up 11 spots into Round 5 with the Redskins to take Georgia S Reshad Jones. Also gave up a seventh-rounder (219) that could have been used on Pro Bowl kick returner Marc Mariani (Titans, three picks later). Grade: B

2011 — Traded up 17 spots into Round 2 with the Redskins to take Kansas State RB Daniel Thomas. The Redskins received the Dolphins’ third- (WR Leonard Hankerson), fifth- (DB Dejon Gomes) and seventh-round (OL Maurice Hurt) picks. Grade: B-plus.

2011 – Trade up five spots in Round 6 with the Packers to take Tulsa H-back Charles Clay. Packers also received a seventh-rounder they used to select TE Ryan Taylor. Grade: B.

Im confused about the grades. How was trading up for a runningback that averaged 3.5 a carry a b-.Also how is the trade up for Edds above a D since he never played for us.

3 1st rounders for Luck??? Sign me up, I don´t care, once in a decade kind of prospect...we would have all other rounds and FA to surround him with weapons!!

With the Peyton situation looking more and more like the Colts will cut ties with him, I really dont think they would trade that pick for anything, with no Mannning they saw how bad their team was without a legit QB, so why would they basically trade away the best QB prospect since the one they just cut loose?

Say it was the Dolphins with the #1 and chance to take Luck, if the Redskins called up and offered the Phins FIVE 1st round picks for the 1st pick (aka Luck) would you do it?

Grades look a bit skewed to me as well. Solid players at best, but not difference makers when going up against playoff teams.

I can't see how the D. Thomas trade grades higher than the Clay trade.

The Edds grade fails too...he never played for us. injury or not, he contributed minimally.

Ha has made other trades invoving draft picks indirectly. most notably Fasano/Ayodele for a 4th to DAL which they later traded away. and ofcourse the Bush trade, swapping 6ths and giving Amaya

I think some of the grades are higher than it should be at this moment but those grades could go up depending on what players like DT and Clay do in the near future. Anyway, those grades don't mean anything as they are/were what they are/were and you can't change them now.

5 first round picks? I would do that in a heartbeat. You would have 2 first round selections in the next five years. You could spend a first round pick on a QB in the next five years without sacrificing a pick for other needs. If you pick a QB in the first round five years in a row, chances are you'll find your franchise QB. I'd take that.
