Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland talks about pursuit of Peyton Manning and his plans for Matt Moore and David Garrard

by Ben Volin

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland has given a handful of interviews this offseason, but we hadn’t heard much from him since the Dolphins officially began pursuing quarterbacks when Peyton Manning was released two weeks ago.

Tuesday, Ireland spoke to the Palm Beach Post about the team’s pursuit of Manning and other quarterbacks this offseason, and his plan for the position moving forward (one topic we didn’t address is the draft, where the Dolphins may take a quarterback in the first three rounds):

On going after Manning even if his team didn’t have a great shot:

“I get criticized if my moves don’t work out, but I’m not willing to sit on the sidelines and let some other opportunities pass us by. Sometimes that entails taking chances, going out on a limb. That’s why we went after Peyton.”
“You only have one opportunity to try and get a player of his caliber. We certainly would’ve loved to have that kind of football player on our team because we felt like he would help us win. When you don’t get the chance you move on and you don’t turn back.”

On letting Matt Flynn go to Seattle:

“I believe in value. What we try to do is we try to be aggressive in looking at ways to improve the team, but we’re not going to be reckless and give up far more than we think we’re giving up in return. That goes with any position, not just quarterback.”

On his plans with Matt Moore and David Garrard:

“Our vision for (Garrard) is that he will compete with Matt, and whoever else might be on the roster for the starting quarterback position.”
“It’s going to be a competition. I told Matt that we need to play better at the quarterback position. He knows that. Every quarterback I’ve brought in here, they know, they have to play better, and it’s going to be a competition. Matt knows, David knows, whoever else we have, Pat Devlin knows, there’s going to be competition to be the starting quarterback.”“But if you’re asking me right now what my feelings would be about the quarterback position as it stands today, I would feel pretty good about it.

On Moore, the incumbent starter:

“No one in this building has more confidence in Matt than I do. I am not discounting what Matt Moore was able to do for this team the last nine games of the season, nor am I discounting what Matt’s season would be if he had a full offseason, full OTAs, a full understanding of what we’re trying to get accomplished. I think his skillset fits this offensive scheme very well.

On Garrard:

“I was chasing David last year when he got cut from Jacksonville. I like his athleticism, I like his arm talent. He’s a proven leader, tough. I think he adds excellent veteran depth and competition to the quarterback position.”

What a strange series of contradictions. I like how he seems to consider himself a daring, thoughtful mastermind.

I agree with most everything he said there. While it would be nice to pick up a franchise qb, every team wants that. I personally hope we don't see much of garrard because that means Moore picked up the new offense quickly and the team is playing well but DG's skill set is nice to have in philbins offense in a pinch. But then again, I see some nice talent on this roster and am optimistic as the patriots get older and ignore defense, and the jets and bills being in a similar situation to us...stuck in neutral

What did he do to lure Manning, besides getting rid of our #1 WR? nothing....oh ok...

Maybe a week or so before the trade went down I saw a report saying Manning's hesitant to play with Brandon Marshall. Now whether this is true or not, I don't know. Point is, I don't see how any fan can come to a conclusion where the Marshall trade helped, hurt, or had any affect at all on our chances of getting Manning.

I'm glad he's gone. Sure, wish we could have gotten more. But I never saw the guy as a long-time Dolphin. We've had him for two offseasons now. Last year, stabbed by his wife. This year, he's being accused of hitting a woman. The guy can't stay out of trouble. Good riddance.

Ok, trade 2 2nd round picks for Marshall. Couple years later accept 2 3rd round draft picks for him....brilliant.

lol ppl essentially slamming Ireland for going after Peyton. You guys are simply amazing.

I would suggest that any criticism of Ireland regarding the QB situation is due to the fact that in four years he has made one investment in the position (2nd round pick for Henne). Even teams that have a QB are still drafting QBs because they know how important QBs are. We apparently don't
