It looks as though many of our 2014 draft picks made the team and also a few UDFA as well. The 1st and 2nd rounders contributed immediately while 3-7 took a little more time to contribute. Although Aikens and Tripp contributed on special teams. McCain and D. Williams as UDFA also contributed a ton considering they both were undrafted.

So my question is, did Hickey Nail the Draft with so many players making the team and contributing? Is it normal for every draft pick to make the team in the NFL and we're just used to 1 or 2 making the team and the rest being trash because of Jeff Ireland? OR do we contribute so many rookies making the team and contributing to the lack of talent that was on the team so the GM shouldn't get props for the selections??

1. James
2. Landry
3. Turner
4. Aiken
5. Tripp
5. Arthur Lynch
6. Hazel
7?? Maybe Fede?

UDFA
McCain
Williams

And it looks like many of the draft picks are expected to have elevated roles this year. Landry, Turner, Aiken, Hazel, Tripp, Fede will all get an opportunity to be either starters or major contributors. If we can have a similar draft this year with starters in the first 2 rounds and maybe a couple more major contributors from the rest of the draft and UDFAgency I think we'll be pretty set in the next year or two.

To find 2 sure fire starters in the first two rounds considering the players currently on the roster and scheme I think we need to go 1. WR, 2. G or MLB. My reasoning is that those are the two positions where I think a rookie would realistically step in from day one and start. I put MLB there as well but there's a question whether or not a rookie MLB would automatically beat out Misi for the MLB spot. If they moved Misi back to OLB then I'd change the Guard for a MLB.

I know we have other needs like CB, FS etc... But I don't think we could say without much question that a rookie would come in from day 1 and beat out Jamar Taylor and\or Will Davis for a starting Job, those two guys were high draft pics and has shown abilities but were hampered by injuries.

FS - No reasonable guarantee that a rookie safety would beat Delmas out for the starting Job.

Your thoughts?

very solid draft...those top 3 guys are players...first time i've been very happy in the first 2 days draft haul real time that i can remember although i did think we overdrafted james a little when we could have traded out (provided we had the opportunity) and still landed him

a nice pick me up after being bummed out about zach martin and cj mosley not getting to us

IMO, it's part Hickey doing a good job - and part a new GM wanting to reshape the roster. :idk:

Time will tell the tale.

Hickey did a terrific job. It's a shame Ross demoted him for it.

3 Starters and minimum 2 developmental backups is what you WANT out of a successful draft & rookie FA combined.

Hickey in his first year did VERY WELL.

He hit 2 starters on his 1st and 2nd rounder pick, which was excellent. Turner, Fede, McCain, and Williams all look like they could starters for us within the next 2 years. I personally am a huge fan of Williams.

I give his 1st year a B/B+ with the potential to becoming an A Draft in 2 years.

A decent job, imo. First two guys were solid picks. The UDFA haul was excellent - McCain, Williams, Anthony Johnson, Kamal Johnson were good post-draft pickups and a couple of the guys we let go will surely make it elsewhere.

But you also have to account for it being a very good and deep draft, plus we didn't get the contributions we might have hoped for from the middle rounds, not even on special teams - which were a mess for chunks of last season.

so far so good. but the true value of a draft is 3 or 4 years down the road. who will still be a valuable contributor to the team then? as of now, it's looking good.

He drafted very well. BTW don't forget about the 5th round pick, Arthur Lynch. Because of his injury we saw nothing but he was a good contributor at Georgia at TE and may have something to offer. He doesn't have speed but he is extremely smart and he can block and he can catch. His hands are huge.

Yes, Hickey nailed it! I just hope they don't take drafting duties out of his hands and put them into Tannenbaum's.

Hiring Tannenbaum and placing him in charge of personnel would have violated the Rooney Rule, so Miami had to backtrack and say that Tannenbaum is NOT in charge of personnel and the draft; that responsibility belongs to Hickey. If Tannenbaum takes charge of the draft, Hickey could probably sue Ross and the team for breach of contract. However, we all know that Big Business lies, so I'm sure that Tannenbaum will have a big say in the draft.

Nail it? No, not IMHO. He nailed the Landry pick who was everything he was advertised to be. James was a success, but nailing it would have been securing the All-Pro rookie Zach Martin.

I have high hopes for Tripp, Aikens, Turner, Fede, and I haven't seen healthy Lynch who also intrigues me.

But as of now we gained a solid pass protecting RT and a reliable slot receiver. That is an average draft in my eyes.

I also think his free agency decisions were poor. Finnegan was way overpriced. Albert was good but not durable. In fact, Albert, Delmas, Finnegan and Moreno were injury risks and all of them got hurt. That left a lot of holes and took a lot of cap space.

All in all I'd say the jury is still out on Hickey.

By contrast, I've been impressed with this year's free agency. Only time will tell whether Suh is worth the money, but all of the other deals were good decisions. The question is who made those decisions? Tannenbaum? Hickey? Both? The tandem? Wish I knew.

Ok, my only argument would be that almost all NFL players that have been in the league for more than a couple of years have an injury history. I tend to think injuries are luck of the draw. Especially when it comes to injuries like the the one suffered by Albert, ANYBODY can have their knees rolled up on. Finnegan was pretty good early and then faded but I think I think they chose him because he fit the defensive scheme, agile quick and good in zone coverage. He didn't work out. Delmas just by the sheer nature of how violent he plays will always be an injury concern, which is why a good quality backup is needed. I like the physicality he brings to the team though. And Moreno was great for 1 game. I think bringing him in was worth the risk and our run game didn't suffer much because of his injury. Miller was still pretty good and Williams flashed.
