Ok, look...I know were all pissed about the compensation. Of course we wanted a 2nd rounder at least.
But what kind of WR's merit a 2nd round pick or better? Be honest with yourself...#1's only. Whether or not they're the "prototypical alpha" is besides the point. The bottom-line is these guys serve a different role on offense. They can be less gifted and less accomplished than Landry because their role is more valuable.
Now...as far the value we got, lets take a look at past WR trades for draft picks. (If anyone can find a better source for a compilation of trades then please share)

Note that many of these WR trades are close to our value^
When you look at this list and compare it to us, I don't think you're going to find a WR that was demanding to be the 2nd highest paid in the league^ (when their performance and role didn't warrant it, I might add.) This is VERY IMPORTANT when assessing the value of our trade .vs. others as I see many people doing. His contract demands certainly hurt our trade value. At the end of the day, we were in a corner and the league knew it. He was demanding an unbelievable recording-breaking contract (for his skill-set) and our cap was ****ed (thanks Tannenbaum.)
Other things to consider:
*If we waited until the draft, then we would've screwed ourselves. We'd be even more desperate than we are right now and so we surely would have been taken advantage of in our trade. No...ultimately, if we took that route we would have had to pay Landry his $16 million for a 1 year rental. Did anyone really want to revisit this nightmare next year?
*If we would have rescinded the tag when we had the chance then we risked not getting a comp pick at all in 2019. This assured us immediate (and similar value) this year.
*If we paid him his ransom then we would have screwed our cap way more than it already is now and in the future. Of course we wouldn't be able to do anything in FA and we'd have to release players.
*If the Browns (with all their picks, and that massive cap space, and their desperate need) were only willing to offer this much...does anyone really think another team would have beat this offer? This was it guys.
So with all that being said...
We got a 4th and a 7th round pick and got rid of $16 million against our cap for a guy who, while we all love him, has essentially forced us to play a timid offense. When I look at these other WR trades and compare our value to theirs, consider the money he was asking, his role in our offense, our cap situation, and the fact that we likely weren't going to get a better deal...I am 100% certain that this was a win for us.
When we look back on this years from now...I don't think we'll be talking about the value of this trade, we will be talking about how we never should have been in this situation in the first place. While I hate Tannenbaum for the mistakes that put us in this position...I can't hate him for, (as far as I see it,) making the only play he could to fix it.
Go on record and cast your vote. This is a trade we will talk about for years to come.
