Ok, look...I know were all pissed about the compensation. Of course we wanted a 2nd rounder at least.

But what kind of WR's merit a 2nd round pick or better? Be honest with yourself...#1's only. Whether or not they're the "prototypical alpha" is besides the point. The bottom-line is these guys serve a different role on offense. They can be less gifted and less accomplished than Landry because their role is more valuable.

Now...as far the value we got, lets take a look at past WR trades for draft picks. (If anyone can find a better source for a compilation of trades then please share)

Note that many of these WR trades are close to our value^

When you look at this list and compare it to us, I don't think you're going to find a WR that was demanding to be the 2nd highest paid in the league^ (when their performance and role didn't warrant it, I might add.) This is VERY IMPORTANT when assessing the value of our trade .vs. others as I see many people doing. His contract demands certainly hurt our trade value. At the end of the day, we were in a corner and the league knew it. He was demanding an unbelievable recording-breaking contract (for his skill-set) and our cap was ****ed (thanks Tannenbaum.)

Other things to consider:

*
If we waited until the draft, then we would've screwed ourselves. We'd be even more desperate than we are right now and so we surely would have been taken advantage of in our trade. No...ultimately, if we took that route we would have had to pay Landry his $16 million for a 1 year rental. Did anyone really want to revisit this nightmare next year?

*If we would have rescinded the tag when we had the chance then we risked not getting a comp pick at all in 2019. This assured us immediate (and similar value) this year.

*If we paid him his ransom then we would have screwed our cap way more than it already is now and in the future. Of course we wouldn't be able to do anything in FA and we'd have to release players.

*
If the Browns (with all their picks, and that massive cap space, and their desperate need) were only willing to offer this much...does anyone really think another team would have beat this offer? This was it guys.

So with all that being said...

We got a 4th and a 7th round pick and got rid of $16 million against our cap for a guy who, while we all love him, has essentially forced us to play a timid offense. When I look at these other WR trades and compare our value to theirs, consider the money he was asking, his role in our offense, our cap situation, and the fact that we likely weren't going to get a better deal...I am 100% certain that this was a win for us.

When we look back on this years from now...I don't think we'll be talking about the value of this trade, we will be talking about how we never should have been in this situation in the first place. While I hate Tannenbaum for the mistakes that put us in this position...I can't hate him for, (as far as I see it,) making the only play he could to fix it.

Go on record and cast your vote. This is a trade we will talk about for years to come.

Paying Landry anything more than 11-12 mil a year is asinine.

Compensation sucks for it but I was wishing we had pulled the tag and gotten a comp pick out of it. So I guess this is pretty similar, with at least a guaranteed draft pick.

There should have been another option...sign Landry before he became a free agent.

But Gase and the rest of these clowns convinced themselves that they had to see Parker in 2017, because obviously they were going to need to pay Parker when he became a stud in 2017. And they couldn’t pay Landry, Stills, and Parker big money. So rather than signing Landry for $10M a year ago, they wanted to wait, to let Parker have another year to prove he was the guy who should be paid $10M+ per year.

Because, as usual, no one in a position of power or influence in this franchise has any ability to see or understand talent.

He should have been locked up a year or 2 ago. This is a back against the wall scenario, and I believe it could have been avoided.

The picks from the Browns suck, but I look forward to seeing where that Landry money will go. Hopefully a good player. Maybe Grant steps in and takes over the slot, and I'd be ok with that as long as he burnt some db's every so often.

The 2 guys I loved who had the energy the team desperately needed are gone in Landry and Ajayi. That part I will miss. Nobody else brings that fire here. Maybe Shake 'n Baker will come aboard.

I'm in a weird spot with this. Jarvis was my second favorite player on the roster, behind Cam, and we lost him for next to nothing. That said paying him Julio Jones money would be insane. He is a great receiver but he is borderline Top 10 not Top 3. There was no good route with this and I am kind of relieved it's over with. No doubt we are worse off without him, but this has been in motion since we gambled on Cutler being competent in August. It's nice to finally move on.

Bonus: I hate we still don't have a competent front office. I mean we pay average players big money (Branch and Alonso), fail to read the market appropriately to keep our best (OV and Juice) and make head scratcher decisions like sign two SS's to long term deals. Everything is always two steps forward and four steps back. I'm so sick of being mediocre year after year.

The problem with this way of thinking is that times continue to change in the NFL. So "Julio Jones money" was "Julio Jones money" in 2015. If Julio Jones hit free agency today, he would get over $20M per year. No one would be able to sign Antonio Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, Julio Jones for $15M per year. Mike Evans just got $16.5M....and he didn't hit free agency.

I keep saying, in a league where Kevin Zeitler got $12M per year as a guard, and Andrew Norwell will likely exceed that in a few days, you can't complain about having to pay a very good WR more money. What you have to do is LOCK THE GUY UP BEFORE HE HITS FREE AGENCY.

I wish that I could have seen Landry’s reaction to getting traded to the Browns lol. The Browns are actually in a great position but really...it’s the Browns lol.

I would have a lot of optimism right now as a Browns fan. They are about to dominate the draft, with a very good GM in place, finally. Tons of cap space. They seem to actually have a plan. I don't think Tyrod Taylor is a very good QB, but he's likely better than Kizer in 2018, and now you've been given the ability to compete with a veteran QB while letting a rookie sit and learn.

Do the Dolphins have a plan? If they do, I don't see it. Their plan seems to be having Gase complain that the offense has to get better after every loss, while doing nothing to actually make it better.

I’m surprised we got anything for him. The browns lose a 4 and 7 plus 15 mil in cap space for a wr that is no where close to being a top ten wr. I don’t like tbaum but he should not be crapped on for this move.

I'd of extended him before last season began at the very latest. He'd of been my priority one when free agency began last year before even making an offer to Stills. His asking price may have been lower then, and we could have skipped on Branch and/or Alonso to make better work the cap.

Absolute worst case scenario -- division rival or not, we had confirmed offers on the table of second round picks last year. Should have ran with it. Cutler was taking this team nowhere.

Terrible mismanagement on our part. I can only expect this to be the eventual outcome for Howard, Drake, Parker (if it matters -- up to him this season), and a slew of other young talent current playing on rookie deals. We've got to get Tannenbaum out of here as soon as possible.

Honestly, I don't expect much out of free agency, although Trey Burton would be a nice start to softening the blow with this move. They have to absolutely beast this draft for me to give a ****.

All of you advocating that we should have signed Landry long term before now have no clue we didn't try that route with him and his bonehead agent turning it down. Yes it sounds good in highnsight.

We as fans especially always over value our own players. I really believe we are lucky to get what we got considering what kinda money he wants. Thank you Browns for preventing us from doing what we did with Branch and Kiko. I mean cmon yeah tons of catches but squat for yards. I've already moved on, actually i moved on from him when they started talking about what kind of money he wanted. The dollars that HE thinks he's worth a absolutely insane for what kinda numbers he produces on the field. I think if you look at them minus the total catches you'd think he was just an average player, especially if he played for another team.

When they traded Landry they purged the last bit of remaining soul from the team. The fire is now extinguished. Even if it's a dumpster fire, it's better to be on fire than wet soggy rotten trash.
