Just going against the grain here as there won't be much to talk about for the next few months as our season is practically over... But why not finish up this defense since they're already quite close to being a top 5 defense already ? Remember we'll have Jared Odrick next year.

Why not draft a fierce pass rusher like Quinn in the first round and go for David Harris in free agency to solidify the middle ?

{It doesn't have to necessarily be those specific players, the point is to keep investing in the defense}

Also get a corner in the 3rd round as this is a deep corner class... you'd probably get a corner in the 3rd who has 2nd round value in any other draft.

The thinking is this defense is close to elite. They are quite young and are on the cusp of being top-notch as the young players gain more experience. The D just needs some finishing touches to make them a top 3 defense imo... alla Steelers/Ravens type defenses of the past.

It's rare that you see elite defenses not making the playoffs. When you hold teams to 10 - 14 pts per game you have a great chance to win. If we had this current defense last year we'd make the playoffs - because we'd definitely be 9-7 or better last year (with sweeping the Jets).

With a great free agency class for WR's, we can get a good #2 WR there in FA.. Find a running back somewhere as they aren't THAT hard to find - and sign Logan Mankins (or someone else) to shore up the O-line.

I think Henne will be fine when he plays with a defense that constantly causes turnovers, and giving the offense good field position throughout games ... and of course bringing in a real offensive coordinator who knows what he's doing may just be enough to get the team over the hump.

When I watch this defense play I can't help but say to myself how special they could be with a couple studs added to the unit.... they could be dominant if the proper pieces are added.

With all the attention the offense is receiving, the shortest road to becoming a perennial playoff team just "might" be continuing to build this defense into a powerhouse unit.

Just a thought I'm throwing out there to stir conversation. I mean, there's enough dreamy Andrew Luck posts to make everyone here nauseous.

On defense there are two guys projected around the middle of the first round that I like:

Allen Bailey, DE, Miami, and

Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M

I just would be really surprised if we didn't go with a player on offense after all the defensive players we took last year.

I'm a defense first guy and there are definitely intriguing players who could be there when Miami picks. I like Aaron Williams, the defensive back from Texas. He could give Miami two shutdown corners, a necessity I believe in the current NFL to contend for a title anyway. Another middle linebacker to upgrade Channing Crowder would be nice along with another pass rusher. Can never get enough pass rushers. I do believe the Dolphins will look offense mostly in this draft, however.

SIMPLY PUT,
Any defense no matter how good that has to play 38+ minutes per game because
of an inept offense will fold over time.

We have been going in a certain direction with a drafting philosophy that hasn't worked because of one reason
NO FRANCHISE QUATERBACK

This is what we need A FRANCHISE QB and we have to have the testicles to do whatever
needs to be done to get this player...if it means trading our whole draft to get to #1
Then do it...because what we have been doing year after year is NOT WORKING

This..

I do believe we are right on the edge of becoming a great defensive team. I also like the idea of drafting a defensive player with our first pick to really get this team over the edge on the defensive side of the ball. However i do think we will go with offense with our first pick. There is no way this organization trades up to get luck. It isnt happening. I wouldnt mind having Jake Locker but I think Henne would be a good quarterback with the right offensive coordinator. I would like to see us trade down in the draft (unless we draft in the top 10) to somewhere around the early 20's and take a guy like Von Miller or i would LOVE robert quinn. But like I said, I think they will go with offense in this years draft.

Do get me wrong I would love andrew luck, but there is no way that we trade away the picks to get him. More then likely we will trade back to regain a second round pick. I just want some speed on offense. I would not mind taking a few defensive players but like it was stated, what's the point of having a great d if they have to play 40+ minutes.

You guys who are saying it won't make a difference since the D will be on the field for 40 minutes because of the offense are silly. You are just overreacting after the Bears game.

When we had Henne in there and were healthy on offense we were in the top 10 for time of possession on offense. What we need first and foremost is a good OC who can get the most out of these guys to score more TD's.

There are a lot of WR's who will be free agents, we can find a good #2 there. We can find a guard as well (along with Nate Garner returning next year). But most importantly, we need a real OC who can get the most out of these guys.

On top of that, a dominating defense would do wonders for the offense -- giving them more opportunities ( which = more time of possession), and routinely giving them better field position... It's a team game.

Maybe i'm a bit of a homer but the only glaring need we have is OC. Sure there are positions that could be upgraded but not major needs. For the first time in quite a while I think we can take best player available reguardless of position.

If we lose 16-0 it isn't because our defense didn't show up. In fact, 16 points was the lowest score for a winning team this week (so far).

I completely agree. But it's going to be tough to find that guy picking in the middle of the draft. Luck may not declare, which moves up Mallett and Locker to probably top 5. Like it or not, the Dolphins will have to strike gold with mid-tier guys in the draft, or bring in a free agent (Michael Vick?) or wait until next year. There are simply too many teams that need quarterbacks picking ahead of Miami. It was a different scenario for the Jets a few years back when they got Sanchez.

this defense is overrated...we didn't get off the field against the ravens on 3rd down despite some long distances to move tha chains and we didn't get off the field against bears either...

^

1) they held the Bears to one TD.

2) The Ravens game notwithstanding (and Baltimore is a very tough place to play btw and this is a young defense afterall), the defense has been good this season. Also consider that we started the season with 8 new starters on D. It's pretty impressive what Nolan has done.

Every great defense will have a bad game now and then (not saying the current Dolphins D is great, just that they're good)...

-the top defense in the league last year, the Jets, were embarrassed by our very own offense last year on Monday Night Football totalling over 430 yards and 30+ pts on the Jets.

-The 1985 Bears are considered one of the top defenses in NFL HISTORY... and the Dolphins walloped them on MNF scoring 38 pts that season.

It happens once in awhile.

But it didn't stop those two defenses from reaching the AFC championship game last year, and the other winning the Super Bowl.

We're not smart enough yet is how I read that, though. Third down is all about tendencies and experience. Every player on both sides of the ball does special film study on it. It's why we have Al Harris out there, IMO. He's seen every exotic third down package a million times. You can't say that about every guy out there. By most accounts, Channing Crowder is the smartest guy on defense -- the one who'll routinely call out the offense's play, Cortland Finnegan style -- and for good reason he's not out there on third downs.

It's just the natural result of having a second year safety, two second year corners, and a rookie switching between nickel linebacker and pass rusher. Hopefully we'll get better as the season goes along. Though hell, it's almost over!

The saga of this upcoming offseason is will be about offense. The writing is clearly and openly on the wall about that by now. Just like last year, we'll see a new coordinator and a drastic influx of free agents and a draft class as slanted that way as last year's was on defense.

If they can do as good a job fixing it as they did the defense, then we'll have something. Henne's not a free agent until 2012, so they'll have another year to figure out how to strike a balance between the kind of offense that suits him and the one that suits our largely possession WR core (assuming they don't trade him away, which honestly wouldn't shock me, though it would greatly anger me). Just as I feared when we traded for him, Marshall hasn't really fixed the situation at WR. We still need a solid deep threat to take the pressure off. We all had high hopes for Hartline but he's still too inconsistent to really scare anyone.

The needs at TE and LG have been much discussed and I for good reason. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Carey go and that would probably be a necessary first step if we were going to take a look at Mankins. Garner's health would be a big factor in that, as we'd either need him out there at RT or at RG with Jerry kicking out wide.

Either way, if McQuistan is on the opening day roster next year I'll just about puke.

That post got overly long and out of hand.

My basic point, re: this thread.

Bringing in a new coordinator is going to virtually mandate overhauling the personnel on offense. No way are you going to lure a top guy without some kind of commitment to spending resources to make his scheme work.

I can live with this defense getting better merely on the inflation of young guys gaining experience if it means we do a thorough satuation bombing of the interior line, tight end and running backs, with at least a nod toward a legit deep threat.
