Good Article from PFW about O-line Problems on Losing Teams

Great article. He is completely right about us and every other team on there. The offensive line has sucked for at least a couple of years now. If you want to look at the main reason why we were 4-12 two years ago, or started 3-7 last year, or why we completely suck this year. Look no further than the offensive line. Sure there are other problems. But it all starts up front and this unit has been very mediocre for years. The line must be the top priority in the offseason. Because without a solid line, our offense will continue to go nowhere.

He's correct. The Phinz front office should be held accountable for neglecting to upgrade the OL. Saban has had two years now, and he's added nothing but one underachieving draftee{Carey}, and a bunch of other teams garbage....

How does he reward Houck after managing to keep a mediocre unit intact during the 2005 season??? He goes out and grabs some of the worst FA OLman in the entire league. Guys like Anderson / Shelton shouldn't even be getting a paycheck at this level. Saban / Mueller should be ashamed of themselves in all honesty. Even team like the Bills / Jets went out and decided to start rebuilding up front. They're seeing resluts already compared to a year ago. We look lost on the OL today, and if Saban continues to throw valuable draft picks away like he has over the last two years, the future doesn't bode well either....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

This is not rocket science... Run the ball.. Protect the qb...

stop the run... Rush the qb..

Those are the keys to winning.

You NEED OL and DL to do it. You have DL... but are lacking OL.

I agree with the premise of the article -- Bad OL = Big Trouble. But, that's about as far as I'd go with what he's said.

Before the season, I think that there were questions about our OL, but I don't think I'd agree with "huge" questions because much of the line that played pretty well at the end of last season was still intact. It's convenient for his article, I suppose, that we now see that our OL is much worse than I think anybody thought or expected it to be.

Also, as far as where to put the money ... I suppose that's also convenient to support the article. I think Ricky Williams once said that a good RB can make a bad OL look good. Obviously there are people who think the opposite is true. And while both may be true, there's only so much money to spread around and teams typically have to make a choice. I don't think there's enough money to have "your cake and eat it too".

Yes but if you invest the bulk of your money in OL.. DL and then 1 major impact player on D... and a qb.. you will have prolonged success in the nfl.

I generally agree with that, but one of my points is that I don't think that you can't do it all at once. Saban/Mueller obviously decided to go QB first by getting Culpepper. It'll take some time to now rearrange the contracts to go and get and/or draft top flight linemen IMO.

I think we made due with what was out there and what we had available with our cap space. We've also have had terrible luck with injuries.

I don't think Saban and Meuller necessarly thought that Shelton and Bennie Anderson were great players, but what were the alternatives?...There wasn't much to choose from. Wannstedt and Spielman did so little for the future of our offensive line, that now it's going to take some time to get where we need to be. I think if we draft effectively in the middle rounds of the draft we can get some quality offensive lineman.

Saban and Mueller were pretty limited with options. They had little money to afford guys like Hutchinson, Bentley, and Backus. But we should've gotten McNeill in the draft and we had shots at Mawae and Ashworth. I'm sure a lineup of McNeill, Ashworth, Mawae, Hadnot, and Carey would be much better than what we have right now. Same thing can be said for the secondary.

i could have lived with that.plus that would have given us more options down the road.we could have picked up the best center,or a good guard in round 2-3.adding depth and youth.shi* i just woke up from this dream, dam back to the real world.

That was a great article and totally in tune whith what I've been saying all along.
