Harbaugh made the transition from special teams coordinator in Philadelphia to secondary coach for the Eagles for one season before the Ravens named him head coach last year. He guided them to the AFC championship game, and the Ravens would get a big boost in their playoff push with a victory over the Bears.

"I model myself after (Harbaugh), my coaching style, the way he handles players, his attention to detail," Toub said. "Everything he is about, I try to model myself after."Special teams have been a breeding ground for some of the game's best coaches. Marv Levy and Dick Vermeil were the first two to specialize in it on a full-time basis in the late 1960s. Mike Ditka was an offensive assistant and special teams coach for Tom Landry in his first job with the Cowboys. Bill Cowher's first coaching job was on special teams. The only coach who handles more players than the special teams coach is the head coach. The special teams coach must find ways to motivate players not in the starting lineup, and he's constantly mixing and matching with depth-chart changes.

When Lovie Smith was hired in 2004, he wanted to implement the Eagles' scheme after they were ranked No. 1 on special teams in two of the previous three seasons. Harbaugh was coming out of a contract. Andy Reid re-signed him and the Bears went for Toub.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid has worked with Dave Toub and thinks that the Bears special teams coordinator could one day become an excellent NFL head coach.

“I have always said that on your staff the coach that is probably best prepared to be the head coach is your special teams coach because they have to deal with everyone on the roster plus you guys,” Reid told Chicago reporters during a conference call. “And that’s a tough thing to do.”Toub worked with Reid at Missouri from 1989-91 and served as assistant special teams coach on Reid’s staff with the Eagles from 2001-03. Toub assisted John Harbaugh, who was hired as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 after spending one year coaching the Eagles secondary.

Other individuals who coached special teams in the NFL before accepting head-coaching positions include Mike Ditka, Bill Cowher and Bill Belichick.

“Very seldom does a special teams coach come out of a game and say, ‘Everything went well today,’” Reid said. “It just doesn’t happen. Normally, one phase somewhere, because you’re dealing with so many different phases, wasn’t as good as you wanted it to be.

“I think Dave Toub would be a great head coach down the road. I don’t think he needs to switch anything. I think there are a lot of special teams coaches in this league that would be good head coaches.”

I favor Mike Zimmer, but dang if the idea that Dave Toub may be another John Harbaugh isn't in the back of my mind right now.

You never know but it speaks volumes that no other team interviewed him and that in the entire history of the nfl like one special teams coach has been hired from that position directly and in reality that coach was also db coach. The article mentions these coaches got their starts as special teams coaches but fails to mention they had to prove themself elsewhere before they got a head coaching job in nfl. Apparently the rest of the nfl does not agree with Reid and thinks yes they do need to gain other positions to get that level of promotion. So he coached all those years and decided to all of a sudden model himself after Harbaugh kind of a weird statement but whatever he wants to model himself after

Baltimore was the only team to interview John Harbaugh. I guess the rest of the NFL just missed on that while they were looking at failed college head coaches such as Jim Caldwell.

Oh, and he didn't just now decide to model himself after John Harbaugh. He coached with John from 2001-2003, and when he took the Bears job in 2004, he patterned his coaching after Harbaugh at that point.

If there's a Dave Toub discussion going on, you don't have to look long to see dlockz shooting him down. Seriously, though....how would Toub spending a year coaching defensive backs or offensive line make him any more qualified? The description of what a head coach does is most aligned to that of special teams coach. Hiring the 'best' offensive or defensive coordinators dooms more organizations than I can count...there's more to it than that. I'm not saying I know what it is, or that Toub is the answer, but to dismiss Toub (and those like him) so quickly is not in our best interest.

Oh yea I forgot he was like quality control at time makes sense now. Still like I said even after Harbaughs success teams seem to have no more respect for special teams coaches than they ever did. Chicago could have easily made him assitant coach. Im not saying Toub will be a bad coach but I like the rest of the nfl dont view special teams coach as the last step before head coach.

if special teams was best aligned to being head coach how did the rest of of the nfl with all these mastermind gm's miss that memo. I call bs on that statement.

You sound like one of those scouts in "Moneyball"...

If Special Teams meant so much, then Westhoff should have been the hire in 1996 rather than Jimmuh. There's a reason why he's a lifer, and it's the same reason why Toub will be a lifer.

Many special teams coaches are lifers but some of them have moved up to other positions proven themselves and made very good coaches, Toub should do the same.

But you can't say that. Just because Westhoff is good at what he does doesn't make him a good fit to be a HC. There's obviously more that goes into being a HC than simply mastering your current title. That has been proven over and over and over again with some of these mastermind X's and O's coaches who are terrible at the helm.

I understand it's a forum, and we all share our thoughts and ideas, but let's be honest, none of us really KNOW what we're talking about here. Hell, even the GM's don't KNOW who will be good and who will bust, and they've seen the good ones work their magic first hand. The piece NFL Network ran on Bill Belichick, and things like Hard Knocks are extremely interesting because we get to see the inner workings of a Football team; and that's the watered down "for TV" version.

Toub is the only candidate that intrigues me, and it's purely a gut feeling after reading the information that's been trickled down over the last week. But, truth be told, I really don't care who we hire, as long as we win. I just didn't want "Call me the Dictator" Fisher because I didn't want him to blow this whole thing up.

Just dont get why anybody is intrigued by a special teams coach. To each their own,

Unless you're Sean Payton where you're calling your own plays, I don't think it matters that you weren't an OC or DC if you excel at the other aspects of the job. He will build an offensive and defensive staff who will handle those responsibilities. As I said, just a gut feeling.

I respect your feeling and opinion but i have never watched an NFl game and said to myself as I watched the special teams coach, damn if that guy was head coach of my team lol.
It seems my mindset is the same as 30 other teams in the nfl that have not looked at special teams coaches for their leadership position. To go from botching hiring Jim Harbaugh to making Dave Toub our head coach a year later is quite underwhelming
