DAVIE — Most conversations about Joe Philbin’s five-year tenure as Green Bay’s offensive coordinator include a “Yeah, but….”

“The Packers’ offense finished in the top 10 in points and yards in all five of his seasons.”

“Yeah, but … he wasn’t calling the plays.”

It’s true, Philbin wasn’t. That job has been head coach Mike McCarthy’s since 2006.

But according to many current and former Packers, Philbin — who arrived in Green Bay as an assistant line coach in 2003 — was more than capable of doing it, and was one of the main reasons for the success of the offense.
Every day at practice, starting on the Monday before a game, he would address the entire unit.
“I was in front of the offense every single day,” he said.

Later on Monday, Philbin and his fellow offensive coaches would split up game plan responsibilities — third down, red zone, blitz, short yardage, goal line, etc. – and collaborate on Tuesday morning to put it all together in a PowerPoint presentation. Later on Tuesday, Philbin would present that week’s game plan to McCarthy, and then to the players in a meeting on Wednesday morning.

Everything about that presentation had to be perfect.

“If any PowerPoint slide had a spelling or grammar mistake, any typo, any scheme error, that was my responsibility, just like a teacher,” Philbin said.

“If I presented something to the offense, they knew it was going to be done right and done professionally, and I expected them to do the same thing. If I get up there and show them something sloppy or half-assed, the players are going to notice that, too.”

During practices, McCarthy called the offensive plays, so he had Philbin help set up the defense.

“Joe would coordinate the defense, just to make sure the defensive look was exactly what we wanted,” McCarthy said. “So I think it tells you something about him, that he makes sure that the big picture is always right.”

i just hope he has more upside than sparano did when he took over.i can remember people prasing sparano on how he dotted his I's and crossed his T's.

i think they have there work cut out for him i think until they get a good o line there is going to be a so so off they need a guard and a tack to sure up the off it they have time to catch and throw then they will be a contender i would say they will be 500 and as long as irlands in control they will never cont always around 500

One of the most insightful articles I've read about Miami in a long time!

I consider McCarthy one of the best play callers in the league, and it sounds like Philbin has a big part of coordinating it all

But wait til the trolls get back their weekday online privileges to minimize our astute, very qualified and capable HC for McCarthy doing such a good job for so long.

Veddy nice! I'm feeling a lot better about Philbin's hiring than I did with any of the past several coaches I'll tell you that. Hopefully he wastes no time turning this franchise back into a winner again. It's time Miami got back on the NFL map!

Wow! Don't know how native speakers feel about this 'sentence' but for a non-native speaker this is impossible to understand...

In business an old adage is that every organization / company takes on the personality of its leader. After reading this article, I think we will be in a good place for long term growth, if that occurs.

APOne of the first hopes for the Joe Philbin era with the Dolphins is that he can help an offense that had grown stale based on his experience in Green Bay.
But one of the first things his critics would mention is the fact he didn’t call plays there.
But his former co-workers lined up to tell Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post that wouldn’t be a deterrent, and that Philbin’s offensive mind would make a huge difference in Miami this year.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider, who worked alongside Philbin and Mike McCarthy in Green Bay, called the description of the play-calling “way overrated.”
“You’re talking about a guy who’s doing the majority of the prep throughout the week,” Schneider said. “I think Mike would tell you that (Philbin) had a huge impact on what they were doing.”
McCarthy admitted he almost passed play-calling responsbilities off to Philbin at one point, but insisted his old right-hand man had plenty of input in an offense that was top 10 in points and yards each of his five seasons.
Philbin was the guy who would address the offense on Mondays, create the game plans on Tuesdays, so it could be installed through the week. Come Sunday, McCarthy was pushing buttons, but they had Philbin’s fingerprints all over them by that point.
McCarthy said 90 to 95 percent of his communication on game day was with Philbin.
“He and Mike talked about every play he would call,” Packers General Manager Ted Thompson said. “It wasn’t like Mike was in a vacuum. They did it together.”
Philbin won’t call plays in Miami either, that will be offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, but McCarthy said Philbin’s skills as a communicator would make him an excellent head coach.
“Joe is extremely organized and detailed, and that will be evident from Day 1 when the Dolphins take the field,” McCarthy said. “I think the character of the man speaks for itself, but I have always appreciated Joe’s ability to coach the whole room.”
That’s far more important than calling a play, and will determine (along with finding a quarterback he trusts) the degree of success he’ll find in Miami.

Good article with words that sound promising. Things like not having spelling mistakes in PP presentations and talking to the offense each day are standard issue management concepts however. Nothing too earth shattering. It's nice to read a positive article, but always interesting to see the praise of the writer when the articles are good, and the hate for writers that are not positive. They article is not too insightful IMO, but still nice to hear. At least no one is trashing the coach. Can't wait to see how he does with the Dolphins roster. I'm more concerned if Sherman can produce. And, to see how his insight into Tannehill translates.
