Good Jake Long Article That Will tick People Off

Despite what they said he can grow into a better pass blocker and he is already one of the best run blockers in the league so I'll take him.

I was unaware that Pro Bowl and HOF status was solidified only within the first 3 games of one's career.

I'm with you guys. I believe that each one of his mistakes sounded like he made a mental mistake but had the talent to stay infront of his man. If the bullrush worked he would of given up sacks. At the end of the day, its doesn't have to be pretty, it has to be effective. He didn't give up any sacks or negative plays, so it was effective. 3rd game, best blocking LT in the league. I'll buy that for a dollar.

First who the heck is M. D. Smith....what is his football experience? Frankly looking at his picture...he looks like he played the football a few times.

He seems to be a writer that has no experience in one thing but is a jack-*** of all trades...or sports if you like.

To complain about a rookie tackle that hasn't given up a true sack....that has been a far better LT...that the Dolphins have had since R. Webb...is a sad example of why fans shouldn't give a hoot what most sports writers write.

I did a quick google on the writer to determine whether he either carries any preconceived biases or tends to shoot from the hip more so than the head, but found evidence of neither. So concluding that this is an objective report, I have to take his observations seriously.

However, few expect a skill player like QB or WR to have refined their pro skillset by the 3rd game so it's kind of harsh to put any such labels on Jake either. He is gonna have to refine his pass blocking instincts and abilities before Henne ascends to the starting position, but I'm confident he can be coached up to do so.

I believe this was one of Hudson Houck's strong suits and do sort of regret that the Triumverate was so quick to dismiss him as part of the Old Guard. The fact that Jake is a man among men (Seymour) in what's now the most important aspect of his game, is more than encouraging - it's heady!

Good article...thanks. Hopefully he will improve his pass blocking skills.

There is every reason to believe Long's game will continue to improve. Given how he is already playing, he could project as one of the best tackles in the league some day.

It doesn't make me angry at all. It states that he's better at RT now than LT. Really? a first year rookie OT is better playing on the right than the left? Next he'll be writing an article that unequivicably will state that water is wet and fire is hot. The Dolphins didn't draft Jake Long to be Tony Boselli. They drafted him to be Jumbo Elliot. We need him to play the left side and, he's more than capable of doing so. He will improve.

Also, I think the Dolphins had like 6 pass plays of 20 yards or more, so the idea that the "weak armed Pennington" was only throwing short passes is asinine as well.

It's already been noted that this was the rookies 3rd game. The guy that wrote this article is an idiot.

This doesn't read biased to you?

"One of the good things about having a weak-armed quarterback like Pennington is that the Dolphins are going to throw mostly short passes, meaning they don't need the offensive line to hold its blocks quite as long as they would if Pennington were throwing downfield more often. And most of the time, Long at least got in the way of the guy he was pass-blocking for long enough that Pennington could get a short pass away."

Short passes? I counted at least 4-5 passes that went to or over 20 yds....when the game is at hand...and you are trying to run out the clock...do you throw deep...or try to move consistantly and causely? The Dolphins use the short pass as if it was a run....many teams do that....the 49ers made a living off that...and won a few superbowls.

Added note...that weak armed QB....threw for what 85% comp rating....no int.

no doubt!

To assume a guy can't improve his pass blocking is just plain stupid.

True. I don't have any problem with M.D.Smith's analysis, just his conclusions. The run blocking will come first (we knew this when Long was drafted) and the pass blocking will have to be refined over time. That's true for almost any LT. I'm sure it's something the coaches will monitor going forward, and we'll have some hint about what they're thinking when we see how they handle Carey's contract situation.
