We all lived through the Wanny era. Take a team with good to very good talent, then have them lose because of bad coaching. What I would like to know is: What other teams have gone through this? I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Some of the older(and wiser) fans may remember teams and coaches that were around before i was introduced to football.

I appologize before hand for spelling and making a potentialy stupid post.

any teams coached by Dan reeves or Marty Shottenheimer come to mind. they always seemed to have very talented teams that would dominate until the first or second round of the playoffs. having been in chiefs country for 13 years, i know first hand about Marty ball from all my frustrated chiefs fan friends. i mean 13-3 in the regular season and a first round dive....

The Chicago Bears had the pleasure of being destroyed by Wanny before us. Who ever took over the Raiders after Gruden left didn't do much with a SB team.

Colts? They seem to under achieve a bit. I know their D isn't the greatest..but..they have a mean *** O with a future HOF QB.

do you think it is coaching ? or bad talent level in the D

I believe marty is the winningest active coach in the NFL right now... and his Chargers are looking pretty good Id say.

Even good coaches can have bad luck.. (I predict Dallas will bomb!)

How about jim Mora.. man was he disappointing in Indy!

The Fins were among the top 5 teams in the league based on cummulative record from 2000 - 2003. IMO, their record was pretty reflective of the talent they had over that era. 2004 was terrible for many reasons (Ricky leaving, poor coaching, inadequate personnel, etc.), but I'm not sure how you can ignore the team's record from 2000 - 2003.

Pats of the early to mid 80's. Every year they were considered the most talented team in the NFL, but they couldn't win consistently. They did, however, frustrate Marino at times with their defense (Ronnie Lippett, Fred Marion, Andre Tippett).
They came to the Orange Bowl and upset the Dolphins in the AFC championship game, then got their butts kicked by the Bears.
That was the best chance IMO for Marino to win a SB, because Miami had the perfect offense to match up against Buddy Ryan's 46 defense. Unfortunately, they blew it against the Pats.

Tony Dungy is one of the best defensive minds in the game, so it isn't coaching.

Don't get me wrong. I like Dungy. I'm just saying they seem to under achieve a bit. Especially if they don't get into the SB within the next 3 years.

I think your talent has been overestimated for many years. just blame Wanny all you want but you had alot more problems than him and alot of the same mistakes happened at the end of Shula's reign then during JJ's years and Wanny's years so it's not all on Wanny.

Hate to agree with a Jets fan, but JJ wan't much better than Wanny and he drafted most of our key defensive players.

JJ brought in a lot of good defensive personnel and a more agressive defensive attitude. We went from one of the worst defenses in the league to one of the best. Unfortunately as much as he improved the defense he tore down the offense. The net result was about the same.
