Frankly, the only way Saban won't win in the NFL is if he makes mistakes with personnel. No one will outwork him, and he has assembled a phenomenal staff. It's a mix of all-star veteran assistants (Hudson Houck, Scott Linehan) and bright young guys Saban can groom to replace coaches who move on. Can you believe he's already planning that far ahead? Like Belichick, he thinks about every possible scenario and has a purpose for everything he does.
I asked Zach Thomas if he favors that approach, and he said he bought into it from Saban's first practice, when the entire staff yelled at him for not going full speed on the first play. That was preferable, he said, to having the coach take off the pads and be your buddy and then start the season 1-9.
