While the Miami Dolphins are only approaching week 3 of the preseason the Dolphins are already looking like a playoff team.
Ryan Tannehill and the first string offense carved up the opposing defense for the second straight week. Tannehill has looked unstoppable in the first two weeks completing 6 of 7 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown week one against the Chicago Bears followed by a 12 of 15 passing night with 102 yards and a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers. Both of these drives were fueled by a solid air to run attack ratio and against both of the opposing teams first team defenses.
Not only has the first team offense been able to have a couple of great touchdown drives in its first two outings, the first team defense has also shown big play-making ability. This past week against the Panthers Jamar Taylor picked off Cam Newton and was stopped three yards short of the end zone. The first team defense also made Jay Cutler look confused and rattled in week one. The first team defense will be a strong unit this year if everyone stays healthy.
The Louis Delmas injury hurts the defense, but the Dolphins will figure out a solution knowing Delmas will miss a majority of the season. The linebacking corps which is the Dolphins worst position group looks good in the first team offense because of what Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake do on the defensive line to slow down the opponents in the running attack.
The only reason the Dolphins will not make the playoffs is if multiple first string players on offense and defense become injured. The backups for the Dolphins have blown leads in each of the first two preseason games which have given the Dolphins an 0-2 record going into the third week of the preseason.
Aside from on the field performance the most exciting thing when watching the Dolphins is their swagger. It seems like this year they have a different mentality on and off the field. They look like a team that is hungry to win, hungry to put in the work and a team that can’t be shot down. They know the players they have can get them where they want to go and nothing can stop them. This new mentality is fueled by multiple players, but head coach Joe Philbin is also a key contributor to this new swagger of the Dolphins. All of them know the playoffs are in their grasp and if they take things one week at a time and continue to get better as a unit they will without a doubt make the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
