A little speculation here: Last year the Dolphins finished with 49 sacks, one off the league leader Seattle's total of 50 and the Dolphin's highest team total since they began keeping totals in 1982.

The entire front seven from last year returns with added depth and experience in the form of Vickerson, Roth and Wilkinson (maybe manatee) and a healthier David Bowens. Another year in the system and more speed in the secondary and at linebacker should translate to a higher sack total this year. Capers loves the blitz and has better tools this year to implement QB pressure.

I believe the Dolphin's team record of 49 set in 1983 and tied in 2005 will be broken, nay shattered this year. I don't think they will hit the kind of numbers the Bears and Vikes did (CHI-72, 1984...MINN-71, 1989 and CHI-70 1987) but I do seriously believe the Dolphins will lead the league this year and that the runner up won't be within 5 sacks of their total.

On the other side of the ball:

Did you know the Dolphins only allowed 7 sacks in 1988 and only 10 more in 1989 and that during that stretch run they had a 19 game run without a single sack allowed: 1988 games 5-16 and continuing in 1989 games 1-7? Danny did like to keep his uniform clean didn't he?

I don't imagine they will break the league record for sacks or come anywhere near close to those amazing fewest sacks allowed totals of the late 80's, but it sure looks like they will be better on both sides of the ball. And so I'll throw out a prediction since there are no consequences.

Sack Total will exceed 55
Sacks allowed will be under 20

I'd love some feedback, being mildly delusional is such lonely work. Go Phins

thanks for your thoughts

Agree, sacks should go up, sacks allowed should go down. Hope the latter is way less than 20 though.
I would love to see a total way less than 20 also, I just don't know how realistic that might be without Marino's quick release aiding and abetting. Daunte pulls the trigger pretty damn quickly but Marino was the best at getting rid of the ball in a blink of the eye. :D

Mind you...our dline was our majority of our sacks last year....we actually got some pass rushers at the linebacker position this year so that should help us out alot..and i agree we will have more sacks than last year

Hudson Houck has worked Miracles with offesive lines before now in his second year with Miami, this line will be amazing. As for Sack total will again will have alot and with Dom Capers def Blitzkrieg attack, many more turnovers will becoming the dolphins way meaning more chances for C-Pepp and that Offense to win some games decisevly

Our sacks allowed should go down if daunte regains all his mobility. Thats his counter to Marinos lightning release.
As for Defensive sacks. I can definately see our sack totals to rise. i would hazard a guess by 10 or so. That would almost certainly make us a favorite for the playoffs.

Daunte's mobility

Agreed, not only will his mobility be a factor in lowering the sack total, he will probably give us somewhere around 300 plus yards on the ground when he tucks and runs over the course of a season. As much as I love Danny, that brings a whole new dealio to whatever scheme opposing defenses try to implement in controlling our offense. I for one am really excited to see what fits for opposing defenses Daunte's legs will bring. Woot!:dolphins:

Daunte's legs will also create more incompletions oppose to sacks. Those 10 sacks he prevents by scrambling and throwing it away will be huge!

taht being said.......

As to Daunte bringing more incompletions: he has the highest completion percentage for carreer stats. I can live with that.:D

Yeah I know that and I can definitley live with that. But I am just saying imcompletions are better than sacks and when he throws it away, that's what we are getting.

The thing about Daunte, is he DOESN'T throw incompletions when he gets on the move.

I think our sacks will actually go up this year. One of the few things Gus did well is throw the ball away when was nothing there. Duante, despite his mobility doesn't often do that. He will either tuck it and run for positive yards, or he will take a sack. I know he suffered behind some pretty poor offensive lines, but throwing it away still has never been one of his strongsuits. In his near-MVP 2004 season, he was sacked 51 times.

He is not the type of scrambling quarterback that just uses his legs to buy time and get rid of the ball. When he goes on the move he generally tucks it and gets positive yards.

Very good point. Well, I'll take 3 or 4 yard scrambles over incompletions any day of the week and twice on Sunday. :D

You got to it before I made the edit though, I forgot to include the point that he also takes a lot of sacks because of it. It has always been one of his faults, he tries to do too much and will always think he can break free and run it downfield, but it often leads to sacks (and fumbles.)

Hopefully the coaching staff will be able to get him to throw it away a little more often when there is nothing there, but I don't think at this point in his career you can change his game much. You take the good with the bad, and unfortunately, you have to give up a few sacks for all the big plays he creates with his legs.

Fumbling the ball is the only negative I have on Daunte. He needs to hang on to the ball or we could get into some bad situations. Keep the turn overs down, and this team will be great!

agree to disagree

Gus Frerrote did nothing well, from the fluttering deep ball to his inability to avoid or even function under pressure. Daunte was sacked 31 times in seven games last year, including 9 in the Falcons game alone. The Vikes line was both decimated and abyssmal. Daunte will think he is in heaven behind a Hudson Hauck line.:shakeno: :fire:
