Glory Glory to Ole Georgia
Enough with all of these posts that say Gus is our best option and going with Sage would be a downgrade. Sage needs to be the quarterback of this team now are these are the reasons:
1) Gus' inaccuracy - I don't need to elaborate on this point, but it's clear to everyone even Saban (who in his PC referred to the pass to McMike as an 'overthrown' pass). One thing that all Phin fans can agree on is that Sage is accurate.
2) Possibility for Future - We all know that Gus' career peaked long ago and now is actually on the decline. Sage is 27 years old. Who knows what kind of qb this guy could develop into. People need opportunities to shine (e.g. Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Jake Delhomme, the list is too long).
3) One thing we all know is that Sage has never really been given the opportunity. Critics say that there must be something about this guy's game because previous coaching regimes left him on the bench. So what? Because the likes of Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt did not give the guy an opportunity, people are willing to write his football obituary. Sage has been the best Dolphin quarterback in just about every preseason that he has been year. You can try to dismiss that by saying that he's playing against second and third stringers. Call it what you want to, but the guy has learned new playbooks and still made plays.
4) Some then point to his game against the Ravens as a reason to not give him a chance to play. Are you serious? That was the guy's FIRST career start and he had to do it against the Ravens DEFENSE. Does anyone recall what the likes of Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Alex Smith did in their first career start, those games were atrocious. In fact, Sage at least had a bomb that he completed to Chambers making it the best pass play of the whole season. That's more than the previous quarterbacks can say for their first game performances. You see most quarterbacks don't get in the league and dominant and Marino or Roethlisberger (who played his first game against a hapless team fielded by a franchise killer, Dave Wannstedt), they need TIME and a CHANCE to develop.
5) In Sage's only performance this year, he came in and completed another bomb to CC that went for a 77-yard score. Some then went on to criticize him for throwing into double coverage or having done it against second stringers; however, the most important thing about the pass was that he gave his receiver a CHANCE to make the play. He put the ball in a position where Chambers could go up and fight for it to make the play. The best you can ask for as a receiver is for you to have a chance, and Gus has not been giving our receivers chances. Sure they are dropping balls, but they are being overthrown and underthrown way more than they are dropping balls.
I really don't think we are throwing in the towel by making a qb change as some people have suggested. In fact, I think we may get a much need charge that can kick us into the next gear. Don't get me wrong, Sage will make mistakes that come with inexperience and lack of actual game time; however, we are reminded weekly that experience and "knowledge" of the game are still no substitute for talent.
