The bottom line: Since 2008, every player Miami has traded up to draft have been busts. But why ? bad scouting ?

In sports, both teams will rarely win a transaction. Whether it is a trade or a signing, usually one team will emerge victorious, while the other is often set back even farther than when they started. For the Miami Dolphins, several offseason moves have been made in recent seasons with varying levels of success.

With each move comes the chance to second-guess a decision. Was it the right call? Could they have gotten more? Why was this decision made? Now, with some time to think about each of these moves, we can take a less reactionary look at each transaction to see how much it has helped or hurt the team.

1-Dolphins Trade Brandon Marshall to Chicago for Two 3rd Round Picks: we were all shocked when this trade was announced.

This trade could have been won had Miami not completely botched both of the draft picks. In 2012, they used the Bears’ pick to select Michael Egnew, one of the worst draft picks in team history. Then in 2013, they selected Will Davis, who was just traded to Baltimore this season.

This transaction will go down as one of the worst made under Joe Philbin. The team sacrificed one of their best players because he did not fit with their scheme, instead of simply adapting to the talent they had on the field. agreed.

Verdict: Loss

2-Dolphins Trade Dannell Ellerbe & a 3rd Round Pick to the Saints for Kenny Stills

When the Miami Dolphins replaced Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett with Philip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe, they clearly downgraded at the position. Not only did they downgrade, but they also were caught paying more money for subpar talent. Before the 2015 season, Miami knew they needed to rid themselves of these players.

Philip Wheeler was cut, but the team was able to turn some value for Dannell Ellerbe while dumping his contract.

After trading Mike Wallace (which will be discussed later), the Dolphins needed a deep threat for their offense. The New Orleans Saints sent the Miami Dolphins Kenny Stills, a young speedster out of Oklahoma, for Dannell Ellerbe and a 3rd round pick.
This is a case in which the Dolphins got it right. They targeted a need, and found a way to acquire a player who filled that need in such a way that benefitted themselves.

Verdict: Win

3-Miami Dolphins Trade Vontae Davis to the Indianapolis Colts:

When you Google the expression “my way or the highway”, Joe Philbin’s picture should appear immediately.

The Dolphins had a dynamic cornerback tandem in Sean Smith and Vontae Davis. Smith, the team’s 2nd round pick from 2009, and Davis, the team’s 1st round pick from that same draft, were both inconsistent. However, they were an effective unit when paired together.

The Miami Dolphins received the Colts’ 2nd round pick in that year’s draft. Who did the team select with that pick?

Jonathan Martin.
Miami lost their star cornerback. Miami lost one of their high-level guards. Miami busted on the pick acquired for Davis.

That does not sound like a winning formula to me.

worst trade in Miami's history.

Verdict: Loss

4-Miami Dolphins Trade Mike Wallace to Minnesota Vikings for a 5th Round Pick

The Dolphins needed a receiver desperately, and Wallace was the only major free agent available. They paid him because they felt it was what they had to do, even if everyone involved knew the deal was a bit too rich for the skills Wallace brought to the table.

Luckily for them, the Minnesota Vikings offered a 5th round draft pick for the embattled pass catcher. The Vikings took on the contract, and with that draft pick the Dolphins selected Jay Ajayi.

This was probably the best trade made in recent years by Miami. They acquired a solid and promising young running back, and were able to eliminate the headache that Mike Wallace seemed to constantly cast upon the team.

Verdict: Win

5-Miami Dolphins Trade Up & Select Dion Jordan in 2013:

In 2013, the Miami Dolphins made a move that would set back their franchise greatly, immediately as they began to establish their footing with new key players. The team decided to trade up from the 12th overall pick to the 3rd overall pick in order to select Dion Jordan, a hybrid linebacker and defensive end out of Oregon. In order to acquire the 3rd overall pick, Miami had to give up their 2nd round pick in that year’s draft.

Verdict: Loss

The Miami Dolphins’ front office will need to learn from these mistakes moving forward if they want to be able to develop and acquire top tier talent in South Florida. Hiring Adam Gase already seems like a step in the right direction. Fans can only hope that the team does not allow history to repeat itself, as Miami frequently has found themselves on the losing end of various transactions.

The sad part is we would all be excited to most of them back right now. Davis, Smith, Marshall and even Karlos freaking Dansby would be an enormous upgrade!

Son of a bitch, Jeff Ireland/Joe Philbin. Just ...**** You man, **** You.

Props to the OP for making Monday more depressing.

lol

The 2013 draft and offseason is depressing to look back at :crying:

I wasn't sad to see Marshall go and yes Philbin had a lot to do with him being traded but the picks fall on Ireland...who was screwing us with gems like Pat White, Patrick Turner, John Nalbone, A.J. Edds, Daniel Thomas and Edmond Gates long before Philbin ever showed up.

Oh...and Brandon Marshall has been in this league for 10 years and still hasn't made the playoffs...read into that however you like but the guy is a locker room cancer.

I still contend the Kenny Stills trade was a bad trade. Kenny Stills did nothing for us last year and if not for Rishard Matthews getting hurt he probably would have never played once Parker got healthy. There was a reason the Saints let him go. Getting Ellerbe off the books was good...but we should have kept that 3rd round pick.

At the time I thought getting Kenny Stills was a good thing, but he has done diddly poo here, so I would rather have that third round pick back. We could have just given them Ellerbe

Don't forget to mention also when we draft players for example Mathis, welker, izzo, ninkovich etc and let them become great for other teams because the Miami Dolphins don't know how to evaluate talent or use them. It's really pathetic. Miami becomes great again if we start drafting the right players. Worse draft picks that comes to mind are Eddie Moore, Avery, pat white, Sammie smith...its just crappy draft after crappy draft. Seriously if I was the owner of the dolphins I would hire slim from this board to do the drafting. No one can do worse then what Miami has done for the past 20 years.

Yeah I don't know if I would call the Stills or Wallce trade a win. Stills looks average and Wallace, while a malcontent, got us 10 tds and was a factor on O. Call that one even I guess. Our front office has made head scratchers for years

Agree for the most part.

Marshall wanted out of Miami, 2012 would have been an ugly year for him if he was forced to stay. Glad we got something in return.

Stills was disappointing but I will defer my judgement until 2016 because of Bill Lazor.

What about Pat White draft pick. Our talent evaluation is lousy combined with our coaches who have wasted or traded away talent.

Should include we traded up to take Daniel Thomas OVER Demarco Murray no less. It should come as no surprise that the common thread here is all the big losing moves were Ireland and the "wins" were Hickey. Ireland was unbelievably terrible at his job.
