Uh, another top 100 list...

But wait, it's actually interesting as this one adheres to some solid standards and points out where the NFL's top 100 list fails. The first one is my personal favorite.

  • Skill-position players are overrated at the expense of players who don’t touch the football
  • Players suffer from recency bias
  • Players who won the most recent Super Bowl get an artificial boost.
  • Contracts don’t matter.
  • Age only matters in the sense of a player’s performance curve.
  • Durability isn’t as important.
  • Players are measured on both their performance and the relative value of their positions.
Today, we’ll start this two-part Top 100 by running through players 100-61. The top 60 will appear on Friday. With each player, I’ll include their ranking in this year’s NFL Top 100 in parentheses. If there’s a large gap between my ranking and where the players placed a guy, I’ll get into why. Which means that it’s a good place to begin with the player who has the largest gap between his ranking on the NFL’s list and my own:

Bill Barnwell does great work. I believe he's the guy who floated out the mere possibility that the Dolphins may regret the Tannehill contract in sort of the same way the Jets regretted the Mark Sanchez contract, and everyone immediately assassinated the guy.

Considering Barnwell has already mentioned Smith and Kaepernick, if Tannehill doesn't get a nod than it's safe to say Barnwell is full of **** and has a skewed bias.

Now that I re-read the article, I think may have misrepresented it a bit. Link here.

No that is not safe to say. I think Barnwell is a good barometer on how general football fans feel about Tannehill. People don't trust him. Think about how we felt when we played Cutler "if we get the good Cutler we could be in trouble, but if we get the bad Cutler we should mop the floor with them." I guarantee fans of other teams feel that exact same way when they hear Tannehill is coming to town (especially Bills fans). And fans always predict they'll get the bad version.

Barnwell does not have some hidden bias against Tannehill or the Dolphins. He had Tannehill on his top 100 trade value chart last season and he predicted the team would make the playoffs last season. His co-host Mays has done a 180 on Tannehill going from thinking he stinks to thinking he is a good QB. Barnwell is much more pragmatic and he's not going to change his opinion all willy-nilly but I get the sense that he does have a soft spot for the Dolphins after doing an in-depth analysis before last season.
