So I just read this article on ESPN about Philip Rivers. I'm not saying we should go after him and I'm not saying we shouldn't. I'm not saying he is going to be great and I'm not saying he's going to be a bust. However with the type of attitude this kid has, I'm beginning to think he might be worth a long look. Here is an article I just read.

He definetely says the right things. It seems like he has a great attitude.

There is a rumor out there that the Jets are trying to work a trade for him, giving up Abraham. I didn't want to make a new thread b/c it is a rumor that has been talked about recently.

While Abraham is a lot to give up, the Jets must be getting pretty desperate at this point. I think that trade would benefit both teams.

You guys really think that the Jets have the $ for Rivers?

That is a good point, I was excited to hear on NFL Access or somewhere how the Jets are going to be substantially over the cap next year. Bodes well for the future, seems we are heading in the right direction and they are heading the other way.

I can't even imagine what kind of money a Rivers trade would accelerate against the Chargers' cap. It would take some REALLY high compensation to pry Rivers away from San Diego, IMO. More likely is Drew Brees leaving.

An Abraham for Brees swap would fit pretty well as both players are franchise players on one year tenders.

do u guys think abraham could be linebacker in the chargers 3-4 D?

Arizona? Dallas? Kansas City? Miami? Oakland? San Diego? Whoever and wherever it is, Rivers says, a team is going to get its leader for the next decade.

man that just sounds GREAT!

Is there some rumor flying around that Miami is going after Rivers? I'm about sick of hearing all this good stuff about some QB from another team who has yet to play.

sorry to threadcrap :(

I dunno what SD will do with Rivers but I sure don't want him going to the Jets. Not that I'm worried about him, I just hate the Jets and think they should stick with Fiedler as their future QB. lol. Anyway, Rivers does sound the part of a leader at least. However CK you are right, that would hurt the Chargers and their cap. However, would the Chargers want to hurt the Chemistry Brees has with the team in the middle of the season? You all but kill your chances of making the playoffs in a tough AFC by switchin to a QB who hasn't started an NFL game by week 6.

Can someone please explain the cap implications? I know that his signing bonus and maybe some roster bonus might accelerate to that year or the next, but how does that affect his cap number for the acquiring team?

Since the Chargers would take the cap hit for the signing bonus and some other stuff, would that mean that only Rivers future base salary would count against the new team's cap? Otherwise it seems like it would double count. If only his base salary counts against the aqcuiring team's cap then that makes him even more attractive because his cap number would probably be in the $4-5M range instead of the $6-8M that you would have to pay for a top 5 draft pick you sign now.

Trading for a guy will always reduce his cap number to just his salary plus any roster bonuses he is set to be paid.

Think of it this way. You only have to apply to your salary cap what your team has paid or will pay. Nothing that any other team paid to the player counts against your cap. Hence, the signing bonus that the Chargers PAID Rivers, has to be counted on their salary cap at some point because they actually paid him the money and they aren't getting it back.

This is why it is rather obvious to me that AJ Smith would franchise and try and deal out Drew Brees way before he would consider trading Rivers. Nobody is giving up a #4 pick equivalent for Rivers, and to deal Rivers would mean you paid him $15 million over two years just to sit the bench...and nothing screams to the owner that your GM is horrible like seeing that you wasted $15 million over the last two years only to end up with the guy you already had. In the meantime, though, they are going to ride Brees' production for as long as they can get away with it.

I didn't think Rivers said all the right things in that article at all. He basically said that if he is not starting for the Chargers next season he will force them to trade him.

Long term, this trade will be great for the Jets....Rivers will turn out to be a top qb in this league someday, he may look average now but he just needs time and experience. I would hate to face him when he comes into his own in a couple of years.
