great article on the 1st pick

Told they couldn't trade, two front office men said they would take Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, two would take Virginia defensive end Chris Long and two would take Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. One said he would take Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.

Another mentioned Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long as a possibility, but conceded he rated Long below Joe Thomas, whom the Browns took with the third pick of the 2007 draft.

interesting, supports my thoughts on taking a DT with the first pick

"If you needed a quarterback, you'd have to take Matt Ryan," Eagles general manager Tom Heckert said. "He's going to have growing pains, but he's big and super smart. All the intangibles are great."

But most teams do not rate Ryan as highly as some previous top quarterback picks such as JaMarcus Russell, Eli Manning and Carson Palmer.

"This year none of the quarterbacks are franchise guys," one team president said

Ravens college scouting director Eric DeCosta notes Long shares several qualities with Patrick Kerney, Jared Allen, Aaron Kampman and Kyle Vanden Bosch -- each of whom will start in the Pro Bowl this year. Like the Pro Bowlers, Long is a fierce competitor, has a non-stop motor, can get to the passer despite not being a true speed rusher and is tough against the run.

"This guy is as good as those guys right now," DeCosta said. "You win with guys like that."

wow this guy is smart like me
Everyone is in agreement that Dorsey will be an outstanding pro. But if, as expected, the Dolphins elect to use a 3-4 defense, choosing Dorsey will make little sense. You don't use the first pick in the draft on a nose tackle -- which is what Dorsey would play in a three-man front.

I've been saying C. Long since way before the college season ended! You can't go wrong with a great DE as your 1st pick, unless there is just a superman available at QB, WR, LT or CB!! Those are the only positions that would trump a great DE prospect, IMO. This year, none of those are available, so C. Long, come on down!

Agree.
In fact the problem is that this year's class deserves a second look in defensive jewels and wide receivers. The Superman tag can be suited on Darren McFadden, but with Ronnie, Ricky and Jeese the running back is the last of our worries.

If he HAVE to take the pick, I would go with Howie Long's son or preferably Matt Ryan. If Beck is a bust and Parcells thinks we need to look elsewhere I hope we do.

Mort saying we want Ryan is probably a smokescreen, but it speaks volumes of Parcells' level of respect for the people we have now.
