great article

Solid article, nothing really groundbreaking though. I thought these were the most interesting points made:

Linebacker Channing Crowder better be worried. Not just because he hasn't made an impact on interceptions or forced fumbles in his Dolphins career. Have you seen how many linebackers signed on here? Do you think Parcells saw no one here was his type of linebacker?

It pays to know Parcells. You already knew this from the coaching and front-office staffs he brought in. But he evidently loved Ernest Wilford and Sean Ryan when they came out of the draft and got them on this second go-round — Wilford, despite having knee and ankle issues.

Guard Justin Smiley better pan out. It isn't just his $25 million contract ($9 million in signing bonus). It's that this team is guard-less without him. It needs to find another guard just to start next season. The good news: In 2006, Sports Illustrated's Paul Zimmerman, who actually studies such things, ranked Smiley as the 10th-best guard in football.

This comment does not make much sense.

Most of the signed LBs are special teams types and OLBs to boot. None of them are in the same league as Crowder.

I am having a hard time determining if any of these new LBs have the talent start as an ILB next to Crowder nevertheless finding anyone who is better than Crowder at that position.

Zach left an enormous hole.

I haven't been all that impressed with Crowder. He's out of position way too much and rarely makes impact plays-- to's or tackles for loss. I think he will be in an open competition w/ Torbor and Anderson for the 2 ILB spots. I also think we'll sign or draft at least 1 more guy to compete there. We'll carry at least 8 lb's this year, maybe even more. Crowder gets alot of love here, but I think it's only because we're familiar with him and he does ok. I haven't seen him as a standout since he left the gators and went to the NFL.

I second this. I think he has a lot of potential but way too often he cannot be counted on to shut down the side he is covering....he doesn't have the instinct to get to the ball carrier that Zach did and he is only an average tackler. I think he needs to be worried about a spot on this roster.

Crowder played like garbage last year. It's time to stop overdoing it with the undying love for Crowder and Roth. Crowder's been good at times, but has really fizzled out as of late. I couldn't name a worse set of linebackers than ours (excluding our current signings, as I know little about these guys).

In the future, please be a little more informative in the thread title (just a request). "Great article" doesn't tell us a thing in regards to who wrote it or what it's about, which often leads to double-postings over the same article. Something like "Great article: David Hyde on Parcells' strategy" would tell people a lot more.

As for the article itself...
"It's inevitable Jason Taylor will be traded."

I disagree. I'm not saying it won't happen, but I would hardly call it inevitable. I think that depends more on what another team would offer them than it does on who they signed or didn't sign.

"If there was hope of a two-year turnaround before Parcells' plan started to focus this free agency period, make it three years now."

If he gives any rationale for such a statement, I completely missed it.

"John Beck remains the new regime's hope at quarterback."

As much as I agree (or at least hope he's right), this is another area that he could have gone more in-depth with.

"Scratch Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey as the No. 1 pick, if you hadn't already. The trade for Jason Ferguson (and signing of two other tackles) said as much."
I pretty much had already done so due to his injury issues, but didn't Miami sign just ONE other tackle (Randy Starks), not TWO?

"Well, the signings of special-teamers Charlie Anderson, Reggie Torbor and Sean Ryan have special team players written all over them.... Have you seen how many linebackers signed on here?"

This sounds a bit inconsistent to me. Why should Channing Crowder be scared of "special-teamers [who] have special team players written all over them"?

"Parcells.... evidently loved Ernest Wilford and Sean Ryan when they came out of the draft and got them on this second go-round — Wilford, despite having knee and ankle issues."

Yep, he loved Ryan so much HE DRAFTED HIM! HELLO?!?!
Sean Ryan, 27, tight end, Jets - drafted by Parcells-led Cowboys in fifth round of 2004; played two seasons under Parcells before being traded to the Jets in August 2006.
Dolphins' interest? 9/10. Parcells obviously liked him during his two years, and just because he was traded doesn't mean Ireland didn't either. Dallas simply had two starting-caliber tight ends (Witten and Fasano) and saw an opportunity to get draft picks for a backup. But the Dolphins are severely lacking at tight end so it wouldn't be surprising if he were brought in to compete.
And even if he hadn't, where did Hyde get his clairvoyant powers that told him that Parcells signing them is attributable to Parcells "lov[ing them] when they came out of the draft" and not to something else, such as game tape since they've been in the NFL?

I thought his other three points were fairly obvious, over all.
