This thread is about what happens on the field and only on the field. I guess I should add the disclaimor on every other thread stating that I have supported Saban from the beginning and i hope he stays solely for continuity. But personally I do not think he is a great coach, I simply don't see it.

I see a team that makes the same mistakes over and over.
I see a team that lacks motivation.
In game decisions are extremely questionable, that includes going for it or not on 4th downs, and replay decisions.
Sticking with players way too long and not giving some of the younger guys a chance.

There just isn't anything that suggests Saban is even a good coach. If you could please post a good coaching move I would appreciate it... tnks.

He's a great COLLEGE coach...the REST remains to be seen...

I have been saying this all year. In columns i have written and in posts. Everyone has jumped on my back and killed me because of it.

Now, in January its funny that a ton of people are seeing my point and agreeing with me.

Nick Saban is a good coach and a bad GM. His 2 year report card shows this and it can't be debated!!

I think he's a brilliant x's and o's coach, especially on the defensive side of the ball. I'm not so sure he's a great game-day coach, at least not on the pro-level, yet. I thought he was a great motivator, but it appears that while he is capable of motivating college athletes, he hasn't figured out how to do the same at the pro-level. In any event, after only two years, I am hoping he stays and addresses his shortcomings.

He's a great college coach. Pro coach? The jury is still out. I haven't been very impressed to be honest. And his GM skills need a lot of help.

His coaching isn't an issue. We aren't losing games because of coaching. We are losing because of talent.

He is awful as a GM. Nothing to improve the o-line. LJ Shelton???!! Please. Keeping around Mare. The secondary is in shambles. Jason Allen was a bad pick, I'm sorry. He might be a nice player, but at 16 that pick was bad. Having a D-line with AARP cards. You rebuild in your 1st year. You don't start rebuilding by bringing in a bunch of old guys.

As a GM he is a disaster. As a coach he is fine. No complaints!!

I would not even consider him a great college coach. He had a few great years, and what, one title. To me a great coach is someone who does it over a long period of time. To put him in the same category with a coach like Bear Bryant is a disservice. Saban is an avg to good college coach at best. He bit off more then he could chew by taking on a rebuilding project in the NFL.

I agree that Saban is a great X's & O's guy. But there is more to coaching than that. The coaching staff (which all trcikles down to him) has made plenty of questionable calls, with Saban directly making those calls, that have directly hurt us in games. Simple things like clock management. When to go for it. When to throw the red flag (and when NOT to), having the team prepared mentally, publicly coddling the players after defeat and flat out poor performances. Not stripping play calling duties from a coordinator who is obviously clueless. Picking the wrong players to put on the field knowing he had better players to put out there (Bell for example). These are just a few examples of things he needs to improve on to qualify as a great coach at this level. In my mind he is ok. Well short of great.

As a GM:  Not good.

If he's not a game day coach, he ain't a good coach. You can stay up 'til 4 in tha AM PLOTTING STRATEGY, but that only takes you so far. If you can't make 2nd half adjustments in the NFL you're a loser.

Good Quarterback = Good Coach.
Bad Quarterback or No Quarterback = Bad Coach.

Basically you could trade in our entire offense for new players, that's what needs to be rebuilt. The only starters on that side of the ball who are probably worth keeping might be Ronnie Brown and Vernon Carey, you could pretty much get rid of the rest and rebuild. We currently don't really have a starting Quarterback. With the cast of characters we have on that side of the Ball Vince Lombardi could be coaching and we'd probably get pretty much the same results.

What this team is in need of the most is a steady infusion of talent on both sides of the ball, but with a focus on Offense. That means good draft choices and some decent free agent signings. We are picking in the top 10 again, so we have a chance to get some decent players in the first few rounds of the draft. It's the General Manager role and talent evaluation that Saban or whomever needs to do a good job of the most, then whoever is coaching this team will look good because that's what good players do is make coaches look good.

So I guess what I'm saying is that our biggest issue is a lack of talent on offense. How would you rate Saban as a GM? Culpepper over Brees? Jason Allen? Offensive Line? Relying on Ricky Williams? Joey Harrington?

What good? Ronnie Brown? Channing Crowder? Travis Daniels? Kevin Carter? Vonnie Holliday? Keith Traylor? With the exception of Ronnie, most of his good moves have been on the defensive side of the ball, just an observation...

I agree with most of what you're saying...But the Culpepper over Brees thing is probably something that I'd do again given the same circumstances. I'd always take a QB with a bum knee over one with a bum shoulder. This one just didn't work out the way we wanted it to, yet. And he did bring in Harrington as a back up and he did an ok job...not great, but ok. Also, at the beginning of the season, we all thought that our offense would be better than it was...Chambers and McMichael really under achieved this year. I thought that our OLine played better as the season went on....and with a year under their belt together, we may have something to build on with them.
