Green Bay a trading partner?

I would be pretty happy with any of these guys. It's important that we don't rely on Clay turning into a weapon. That's generally folly with any rookie, especially a 6th rounder being asked to learn multiple positions. As CK's said, Williams is having enough trouble trying to learn one position in Green Bay, and he's the Mackey Award winner. Why should we be expecting more out of Clay?

What does being the Mackey Award winner have to do with anything? That's a college award. Does it make him smarter? Because he won the award should he already have a grasp of NFL offenses? Is that part of the award criteria?

Tim Tebow won the Heisman...should he be an elite QB in this league? What about Troy Smith, Matt Leinart or Jason White? Should all of those award winners be super stars in the NFL?

Referencing that he got an award in college makes no sense to me, this is the NFL.

But why trade a draft pick for slightly proven talent when you can draft your own completely unproven talent?

kcbrown, who is the chick in your sig?

If you don't think that has any bearing on Williams' ability to pick up an NFL offense, especially given he ran a very pro-style system in college, then that's fine. I just disagree. Clay is being asked to go from Tulsa's spread system, where he played multiple positions and was more of a jack of all trades then a true tight end or fullback or running back or receiver, to learning H-back (which basically means he has to learn how to be a fullback and a tight end) in an NFL offense. Learning one position would be a big enough change going from Tulsa to the NFL, but learning two positions is a monstrous change. Much bigger than the change that Williams is being asked to make playing the same position from a college pro style system to an actual pro style system (though, to be fair, Petrino's system is from a different tree than the modified West Coast system they run in Green Bay).

Put this way, Williams got the Mackey Award while being a pro style tight end. He's still a pro style tight end. Guys like Tebow got the Heisman while being a spread style quarterback where he's being asked to play pro style quarterback in the pros. That's why the award has relevance.

Being a Tarheel fan, I watched Taylor regularly. His athleticism was very good from day one but over the course of his senior year he got better and better until the bowl game against Tennessee he really shined. Taylor was a steal for the Packers. Under the right vision from the coaching staff he can turn out to be a great NFL tight end ... which means he doesn't have a chance to make it in Miami under our FO.

I watched a lot of him his senior year as well. It's interesting how the guy came out of obscurity because of Pianalto's injury but with every snap he just kept getting better.

I don't see any problems giving up picks. I'm sure too many people would not have been upset if we traded a 2012 6th rounder for Williams on draft day . . . and its a big position of need. Waiting for people to get cut is just putting unnecessary risk into the equation. Hell if you can get 2 guys, get 2 of them, cut Polite, move Clay and Hilliard as FB's . . . I dunno . . . but the TE group has been down right pathetic the last 2 years and it will be 3 years if we don't address it now.

The Mackey award still has no bearing on whether he can pick up an NFL offense. He played for Petrino, who failed in Atlanta and quit, so what? Yes Petrino's offense is closer to an NFL offense than most schools. NFL terminology, but still mostly a spread offense and it's different than the WCO Green Bay runs. I still don't see what the Mackey award has to do with anything NFL related. Most of the college awards are popularity contest now anyway. He wasn't even the highest ranked TE in the draft, most had Kyle Rudolph and Lance Kendrick in front of him at least.

At this point Merling has reportedly been on the trading block for like two weeks and seeing how nothing's happened, there's a good chance that no team would do a Merling for a box of Twinkies trade. Teams just don't seem interested.

If it takes a pick to get the guy you like, so be it. They have FIVE guys all of them worth compensation.

That literally made me lmfao and rofl! and im in class.. good stuff

I hope they play Merling till his wheels come off tonight...and if he gets man-handled, he might find himself watching the season from the same place as me, a couch!
