Greg Cote: A case can be made to defend Jeff Ireland

How are we lacking depth? Our D-line is deep, our RBs are deep, Matt Moore is about as good a backup QB as there is, we have quality depth at receiver between Matthews fuller and Gaffney, despite losing Vontae we have good depth at DB.

I keep reading that we have great RB depth. Thomas sucks and Miller can't grasp the playbook. There is a reason our running game becomes pedestrian whenever Bush stubs his toe.

This again. Who?

I wouldn't know who on here wanted him, I wasnt on this forum at the time but plenty of Dolphins fans wanted Flynn and were not happy when Seattle offered him a lot more.

I agree with some of your points...depth is good at QB, RB, D-line...however, that is it. No depth on the O-line, receiver, LB, and at DB.

Any run of normal injuries and the Fins are screwed.

If you were not here, how can you make that statement? That said, there were many of us who wanted Flynn, myself included, but I recall the general consensus was the Seabirds overpaid for him. I don't recall anyone wanting him at 10 mil.

I didn't specifically say many on this exact forum wanted him (at least I don't think I did) but I remember plenty wanting him and then criticized the management for low balling him and were outraged when he signed for someone else as we weren't willing to pay big.

My apologies as I assumed you were talking about this forum. It seems I do recall some people claiming they low balled Flynn but I believe that was more about pent up frustration then anything else. Again, I recall the very high majority thought 10 mil was way to much.

Disagree with the most villified figure in South Florida sports...that should be Jeffrey Loria, unequivocally, hands down, the worst owner in all professional sports.

Ireland should be without any contest soley due to the fact he is in the market of NFL...the MLB is fading very quickly, have you not seen the average pro baseball attendance? Out of any franchise? It looks like 70% of the stadiums are lucky to get 50% attendance, look at the Marlins' stands...there is all of 2,000 people there. The 'Fins draw in 55,000 on average and that is looked upon as patheitc. Ireland is just more popular by default due to the market he is in, and if the Marlins won a WS, you would see a less than pleasing championship parade. Could you imagine the 'Fins winning a Superbowl, what the streets of Miami would look like?

The point you make worded differently, as well, is that every time we pick up a FA a lot of fans here jump up and down assuming that person will be great. There are things you do, just to test the waters and see what that player can bring to the team. This is just about always going on. I'm sure in some cases team management is not expecting as much as the fans. I'll give that point to Ireland.

However, just because we are having some success, does not mean everything was great either. Wins can hide issues.

I'm a wait and see with this team, but so far so good this year. They are doing better in all areas than I expected. Lets see if it continues.
Just as wins can hide issues, losses sometimes cover up progress. outside looking in we're 2-3. but we know our team did more than enough and if not for two field goal misses, we'd be 4-1. then how much different would this converation be about ireland right now?

He makes a very valid point. The general public dolfan or not, roasted the 'Fins for "LOSING out on another oppurtunity", and I have read countless comments of dolfans hating the fact of Flynn going with SEA.

Failures in free agency? You mean a handful of low risk minimum wage veterans all of which were replaced? It isnt like he handed tens of millions to a bust like Flynn like so many fans demanded.

And this post highlights my problem with this article. Because Ireland has handed out tens of millions to busts. They just didnt list them.

I didnt see a single mention of Gibril Wilson, Jake Grove, Justin Smiley, or others. He gives Ireland all the credit in the world(some undeserved like Philbin hire) but never once mentions his history of second round busts. I find it hilarious that 2 of the 3 pieces Cotes lists as "well we just need...." we already had but gave away. Saying we are just a wideout and corner away is laughable, because we wouldnt have those holes in the first place if Ireland hadnt created them.

If your going to make an article about "defending" Ireland, at least make it fair and acknowledge the failures as well as the successes. Thats all.

For me it's more about the Jake Groves and Justin Smileys. Parcells was known to have a disdain for injury prone players and yet they bring in these two and it ended up biting the team in the butt.

I forgot all about Gibril Wilson.

I'll admit it, i wanted Flynn. I also wanted Manning. I wanted both of them AND wanted us to draft a quarterback in the first round. I also wanted us to draft a quarterback in the first round last year(Ponder).

I wanted us to keep throwing money and draft picks into that position until SOMETHING worked.

After 12 years, i was done playing around. It boggles my mind that people hold it against Seattle when they did the right thing. They got aggressive about their quarterback problem. And the concept you can "overpay" for that position is mindboggling. I swear this fanbase went through an Men in Black mind wipe after every season to forget just how putrid our play was at that position.

HAHAHA, and it starts. Glad to see more people are starting to come to there senses..:3w:
