Greg Cote: The time is right for Miami Dolphins to hire Dan Marino

Dan Marino was a great QB for the Fins.....let's leave it at that.

I would hire both Marino AND Taylor. These love this franchise. But that is not the sole reason why they should be hired.

It's my opinion that they would be able to advise Ross and co. on how to cope with all of the adversity the team is facing.

I don't believe that Hicks or Philbin NEED to be lectured on how to do their jobs. They've both been involved in the game for far to long.

But the culture is flawed. On the corporate level. There is so much focus on the locker room that it's clear that Ross is trying to run the team like an office. It doesn't work that way.

He needs a buffer. While he makes decisions, he needs a liaison to assist in the conversations that need to take place with key individuals.

It's like me buying into solar energy with no clue about it.

Petersen is not helping. His business partner isn't helping. Otherwise cluster**** after cluster**** wouldn't be happening.

Is it a PR move? Yes a wise one. The brand has taken a beating. Ross needs all the help he can get.

I agree, a buffer between Ross and the team is desperately needed. They need a "football guy" to be the public facing voice of the organization because Ross' rep is tarnished beyond all repair.

Marino may actually help stem some of the media backlash on the team, at least for a while.

The OP keeps relating Marion to Elway in a business capacity. Elway actually had experience running a football franchise, being an executive in league offices, owning and operating car dealerships, and has some business and management acumen. Elway was qualified for the Broncos' GM position because of his business experience, not because he was an NFL QB. Greg Cote seems to think being an NFL QB is the qualifying factor for being a successful GM, and he's wrong. Marino has never run or managed anything. I love Marino, but a great player doesn't constitute a great businessman.

Would Dan want this? Why come back to a franchise that is just now scabbing over from all the injury? I'm thinking he waits a year to come in when the dust settles.

What other NFL team has a former star who is an executive there, but has no real power?

I wrote this ina nother thread

Hire Marino with no role that sounds about right - LAME

A "neutered" hof qb walking the halls - yah that's making such sense right a bout now

Love and in awe of Dan as much as anyone else but IMO his off-the-charts instinctive QB'ing IQ does not translate into overall football savvy. Elway is a Stanford grad who's dad was a very well respected high school and college coach. Dan partied his way (by somel accounts) through Pitt and comes from humble hard working origins. Not a "real world" dummy by any means, but tothink his football acumen will as successfully translate into organizational expertise is more optimism than logic- especially after seeing him on CBS for years. Not a slam by any means cuz Dan is nobody's fool but just a dose of reality that aside from being a great frontman, putting our eggs in his basket will likely end up making yet another scrambled souffle. :idk:

I think some of us are forgetting this happened before.

Option 1- hire Dan for some sort of consultant -type PR position with no real influence. Why it won't happen: Dan doesn't want to be a figurehead. When he was given the position before, he quickly realized it was more of a figurehead position, so he bailed.
Option 2- hire Dan as "football czar" with actual thumbs up, thumbs down power. Why it won't happen: Dan would be happy, but Hickey? Philbin? kind of undermines the new GM, what's the point?

Sorry guys, Danny is not going to El-way into this franchise. We need new a new vision.

Come back to us Dan.. You'll finally get that elusive Super Bowl ring

Did we not try this before?

Marino wants a PR/Celeb type gig if he wants a job at all.

Highly doubt he wants to fly around and attend meetings and do actual REAL work. He would rather make some apperances, shake hands, take pictures and collect a check.

Marino would restore credibility to the franchise. I think that's the key thing. People around the league respect Marino. It needs to happen.

I was initially against it because of what happened ten years ago, but after some people set me straight a bit about that, I would welcome this move with open arms.

Lots of good comments guys. i'm not totally sold on the idea but if it is ever to be I think now would be the right time to do it.

Does Marino even have interest ? I don't know.

Could he ever be more than a public relations guy ? Not sure.

Do Ross and Marino even have a relationship ? Never seen them together so i have no clue.

Dan's name always pops up when we have staff changes so i thought i'd post Cote's take on this subject for debate.

Marino didn't go to Michigan, so Steve Ross probably doesn't even know who he is.

:chuckle:

You may be right as the owner's football knowledge outside of Michigan is definitely in question.
