He is gonna be a lottery pick...he will not need a degree.

He is still elidgible.

What is the point?

no point.

the dude doesn't give a **** about college. it just gives him something to do until he becomes eligible for the draft.

btw, no way the kid is18...he looks like he is 55.

I know it's a typo but it's funny talking about a kid doing nothing in college and you wrote "elidgible"

It is Eligible. The "D" is right next to the "G" on the keyboard. I type fast..that is why you often see me type the word "The" like this: "Teh"

On my keyboard the D is next to the F but I understand, I usually have typos in my posts too. i type faster than I should.

true that, he looks like Dikembe Mutombo

The funny thing is, I took the history of Rock and Roll for two years. Aced it both times of course, but it is a really fun class. I haven't been able to use it towards anything work related, but it is fun to drop a tidbit about someone like Jimi Hendrix in the midst of a conversation.

I don't blame Oden for this one bit. Technically, he doesn't have to take any classes in the second semester to be eligible to play if he plans on going pro next year.

That was the basis of Bob Knight's comments recently about how this mandatory age limit in the NBA has hurt college kids. Because now, you have kids who don't want to be in the NCAA and are not getting any education in the meantime. They are simply wasting a scholarship and seat in the classroom (if they even go) and robbing some other kid of the opportunity.

THE POINT is that this is still NCAA basketball. And he is supposed to be a "STUDENT ATHLETE". And when you take 2 classes and one is the history of rock and roll.........you really aren't a student. Yes, by the "letter of the law" he is eligable to play. BUT, the NCAA should tweak this rule to not let these kids just come in and do nothing taking joke courses and only 2 courses at that and then just play basketball. Make a rule they must be enrolled in at least 4 classes or something. That isn't unreasonable!!!! It isn't fair to the REAL student athletes out there who must juggle classes, practice, games....etc!!

And because he is turning pro after this year, he can stop going to classes NOW!!!!!! Because by the time the tournament ends whether he is eligable for next semester means nothing he is gone. So, this kid went to Ohio St ......took 2 classes in 1 full year (History of Rock and Roll as one of them) and will then turn pro. How is he a student athlete???? and if you don't see that as a FLAW in the system.........then I dont' know what to tell ya

I totally agree with you but Ohio State could careless if Greg Oden decides he wants and education. Ohio State is making money hand over foot and the extra exposure is priceless. I like seeing these guys in college but they don't really want to be there. I am debating if its worse to let these guys linger on NBA teams and be 19 year old millionaires with ego's, or play 1 year of college ball on a worthless schedule of classes while becoming a espn highlight.

I don't worry about the players but I worry about the kids. What type of message does this send? You don't have to be smart if your athletic?

What happens when a kid doesn't get a good education because he doesn't think he needs to and then he blows out his knee and has no career in sports? What happens to all the kids who decide they don't need to study but then fall short? What road is our society taking?

I took the history of Jazz and Rock music for my degree. It was a requirement for basic classes that had nothing to do with my degree, but I had to do anyway. I don't have a problem with that but Greg Oden is a part-time student as freshman with 2 classes is ridiculous. I realize the guy is only going to school for one semester and College Basketball is much diffrent from College Football in terms of how long you're going to play. The NCAA uses the 18-19 year olds just like they use the NCAA because they can't go straight to the NBA. If the NCAA were to propose a rule I think it should be something like until they get a certaim amount of credit hours they're not allowed to be part-time students. So for instance Matt Leinart would've been eligible but Greg Oden would've needed two more classes to be eligible because Leinart was redshirted and basically lost a year of eligibility and could take whatever classes he wanted.

Just for a diffrent point, I doubt the ages of most of the players coming from Cuba for baseball but Greg Oden and LeBron look like they're both 35.

Its been going down that road for awhile now.

Bingo. Why would Ohio State, or any college institution care what their star basketball player is doing or not doing in regards to their education? At the very least, said schools is generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue, if not more for that year. Moneis that in years past would have gone straight to the NBA and bypassed the NCAA all together.

That is why this rule will not change. If these kids HAD to go to school while in the NCAA, they would simply sit out for a year or play elsewhere until they were eligible to play in the NBA. You can't tell me that if Oden decided to sit at home this year and declare for the draft, that he wouldn't be the top pick still.
