No way would I want Olsen in the 1st. He hasn't shown a nose for the endzone that you want in a TE. He can run and played on some bad teams, such that his mediocre stats may be misleading. Nevertheless, I would only take a TE in the 1st who is an absolute special guy. I don't see it with Olsen. There are too many premium positions that need to be addressed for this team. If we were already solid with speedy receivers, left side of the line and quarterback, I could see taking Olsen to round out a great offense. Teams like New Orleans or Chicago would have that luxury. Miami does not.
We do need to add a TE, but I would do it later. I do think that we could get a good TE starting with our 2B pick, 3rd or 4th. Since Zach Miller only ran a 4.8, he could be there at 60. In the 3rd and 4th, guys like Chandler, Patrick, and Spaeth figure to be around. Chandler and Spaeth are solid blockers and could team with Martin and Peele to give us a TE by committee.
To this day, other than Keith Jackson's brief flash, some of our best TE play came when we used the combination of Dan Johnson, Bruce Hardy, and Joe Rose. Martin, Spaeth/Chandler, and Peele could be a new committee.
Yes, we need a TE, but we are better served taking the BPA.
