Pro Football Hall of Famer and Dolphins legend Bob Griese remembers what its like to go through growing pains on your way to the top. For the first three seasons of Griese’s legendary 14 year career with the Dolphins, the team struggled mightily, and didn’t make the playoffs. But then the rest is history, as the Dolphins would win two Super Bowls in the next four years, and record the greatest season in NFL history by going undefeated in 1972. Griese hopes that eventually current Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill can follow his career path, but maybe just accelerate his growth a year earlier than he succeeded in doing back in the 1970s.

“It’s his third year, and he expects to get better every year,” said Griese. “There’s a lot of good things that he did, but you just put those in your back pocket…Now you look at the things you didn’t do so well, and that’s what you improve on. I always say you learn more from your mistakes than you ever did from winning. You go back and look at your mistakes and see what you did wrong, and that’s what you need to improve on. He’s a bright guy and wants to do that.”

Griese also wants to be of assistance to Tannehill in any way he can, as some of the biggest names in Dolphins history keep in constant contact with some of the current stars. Most recently at a dinner attended by Tannehill, Griese, and notable alumni Don Shula and Dan Marino, all the former Dolphins gave him a simple message. Basically, if he needs their help, don’t hesitate to ask, and Tannehill feels good doing that if need be.

“(Sometimes) the current quarterback needs to talk to the old veterans, I think he feels very comfortable doing that,” said Griese.

I don't know why the Dolphins Legends have seemed at arm's length for a while but I am really excited that they are involved with this team. I really think it will help the team buy into the pride that this franchise once had.

I'm in Tanny's corner of course, but even he realizes he needs to step up or step off.

The obsession to win is often enough to propel players to excellence. Jason and Zach were like that, and success was almost a side effect of their willingness to sacrifice, to work hard, to be determined, to do whatever it takes. Marino had that, too, he was back there with braces on yelling at his receivers and being good cop/bad cop with his offensive linemen, who he knew protected him. He bought them stuff all the time. Whatever it takes. Manning has that mindset, he's all about preparation, repetition and hard work. Brady is like that. Tanny has the talent, he has enough of it. He just has to focus and make this a real priority and make it happen.

Just guessing that they were not offered to be paid before and/or that some coaches were not on board with it. JMO

I figured some of the coaches may have discouraged their input. Stupid IMO. Glad to see that change.

I was nice to see Shula, Marino, and Griese reaching out to him.
Grease can help him with mixers, and Marino may have financial or marital advice for him. :chuckle: (sorry I couldn't resist)
Seriously, Griese had a knack of drawing teams off sides with voice inflection (easy first downs)
Marino could also discuss the finer points of deep ball passing.

The one thing I wish Dan could pass along to him is how to move in the pocket. Dan had a gift of being able to take a half step at the exact right moment to make a rusher on his blind side completely whiff. Ryan has ten times the mobility but Dan was ten times harder to sack.
