“Everybody would try to get the quarterbacks out of the game back then,” Griese said Thursday, via the Associated Press. “They weren’t getting paid for it. They would just try to knock you out.”Griese explained that it was simply part of the game.“It wasn’t malicious, it was just hard hitting,” Griese said. “There were no bounties. They kind of knew that if you knock the quarterback out of the game, you had a pretty good chance of winning.”http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/04/12/griese-claims-bounties-werent-needed-in-the-70s/

Pretty much, but today is all about "headlines" and what people say. Everybody knows if you can knock Drew Brees out in the first quarter . . . you have a better shot to beat the Saints. Players know that, coaches know that, fans "should" know that. However knowing this . . . when you hear it come out of somebody's mouth . . . it strikes a bigger nerve and people get all disgusted . . . then you hear extra money is involved and it becomes a tragedy.

Greg Williams certainly crossed the line and he is getting punished for it . . . but I just don't want people to think the Saints were the only team who's wants to take out players. Pro athletes are competitors, you do what it takes to win . . . legally on the field.
