During a recent interview with The Finsiders, cornerback Brent Grimes talked about his weightlifting prowess and how we was looking “swol.”
“That’s what I do,” Grimes said. “I just go in here. I tell ’em all the time, you need to get more weights in here because I’m lifting all of them and it’s not enough weights in this weight room. And I’m kind of tired of it. I’m kind of tired of not getting enough weights in there. I’m trying to become great. I’m trying to be great. They just need to get more weights, that’s all I need to say.
“You witness it, some other people have seen it. I just lift. That’s what I do and I’m just getting stronger and stronger and they’re impeding my progress with not having enough weights in this weightroom. I hope you get that over to (strength and conditioning coaches Darren Krein and Dave Puloka). I’ve been complaining the whole offseason, but if you could get it to them, I think they’ll listen to you a little more than to me.”
The most amazing part of Grimes’ comments is that he managed to keep a straight face during the videotaped interview.
See, every Dolphins fan knows that lifting weights isn’t Grimes’ calling card. Grimes isn’t weak, mind you, but at 5-10, 190, he’s always been considered on the small side.
That hasn’t mattered on the field because Grimes has become one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, along with one of the best free agent signings in Dolphins history.
Grimes made the Pro Bowl in each of his two seasons with the Dolphins and recently was tabbed as the 38th-best player on the NFL Network’s Top 100 list for 2015 in a vote among his peers.
But, weightroom jokes aside, Grimes isn’t about to get complacent. He spent the offseason program trying to find ways to get better, and that mind-set certainly won’t change once training camp starts in late July.
“You’ve just always got to challenge yourself,” Grimes said. “Yes, I’ve had some success in this league, but you can never get comfortable because the moment you get comfortable, that’s when things start going bad. That’s why, if you follow us around, you always see me getting ‘swol’ in the weight room. I stay ‘swol.’ That helps me out on the field, and when we get on the field, I try to work on something every practice.
“That’s what I do, especially when training camp starts. I just focus on one thing every practice. It might be a weakness, and I’ll work on that for a whole practice. Practice might not go as great as I wanted it to because I’m working on something that I want to get better at. That’s what I do. I challenge myself every day, every phase of the season. I challenge myself in some new lifts, and lifting stuff different. In OTAs, work on stuff, helping guys out and in training camp, the same thing. Gotta focus on something to keep yourself motivated and trying to get better.”
Grimes already has come a long way since his days at Shippensburg University and a first NFL season spent on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad.

It’s really been quite a remarkable journey, one that included a stop with the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe.
