Nobody intends to make excuses. And few people want to here them.
But both starting defenders blamed the Mile High drop, which featured the Dolphins defense bottoming out in the season's final six games, to the unit being worn down at the end of the season.
"I don't want to make excuses. We just played bad. A lot of things didn't go right. People started getting hurt. We were stretched out thin," Grimes said. "Our linebackers were hurt and banged up all year. What it really comes down is we were playing through that all year and towards the end we just flamed out. Maybe we ran out of gas."
Grimes and Odrick both acknowledged the Dolphins' coaches have to do a better job making sure the players have some gas left in the tank in December.
Grimes said the players were "beat down, tired at the end of the year," and the Dolphins must find a way to "pace themselves during the season."
Numerous players complained about the team's practice schedule last season, and the coaches even began to adjust it in the season's final month. But clearly they were too late.
And considering the Dolphins have been a poor performing team in December during Joe Philbin's three seasons as a head coach (2-3 in 2014, 3-2 in 2013, 2-3 in 2012) there might be something to their theory, these issues.
